Has anyone seen info regarding products to use the newly formed NII band? I want to find gear, make arrangements with my ISP, and have 20Mbps Internet connectivity! The NII Band is radio spectrum at 5GHz allocated for unlicensed use by data communications at speeds upto 20Mbps. It was established 1/97 by the FCC in FCC 97-5 with regards to FCC-96-120. My ISP is within the 6 mile range of the 4 watt band (5.725-5.825GHz), and if there was an inexpensive device with, say, an ethernet connection to the pc, I would have VERY nice Internet connectivity, and no telco costs!!! I can see ISPs going for this in a BIG way. Hey hams! Why should we be left out of this parade? Talk about packet radio! Anyone else have interest in this? Anyone wanna start a wireless ISP? Hmmmmm....... fyi, John Duncan N1MYT [Posted by WWW Notes gateway]

I haven't seen any equipment announced for the NII Band. Actually, I haven't even seen any components announced for building equipment (although I don't watch that stuff too closely). From the ham side, we can experiment with existing 902 MHz wireless gear for fast data, especially under the current STA which waives some of the amateur spread spectrum rules. I'd like to find someone (in RF range) interested in playing with this stuff. /gary |
