| 245.3 | OpenVMS Documentation, STARS, notes | HAN::HALLE | Volker Halle MCS @HAO DTN 863-5216 | Fri Feb 07 1997 06:23 | 14 |
|  |     Tara,

    you might want to obtain an OpenVMS documentation set and start by
    looking up the pointers to LATSYM and PRTSMB in the OpenVMS Master
    Index.

    For problems/solution type of information, access the STARS
    OPERATING-SYS database and search for the term 'LATSYM'. Another place
    to find common LATSYM-related problems is my notes-conference
    HAN::LOOPING_LATSYM.

    HTH,

    Volker

| 245.4 | But WHAT are they? | BOOKIE::PANGAKIS | Tara DTN 381-2433 | Fri Feb 07 1997 09:53 | 10 |
| | Yes. I have the URLs to the OpenVMS documentation.

    I've been to your notes file.

    But, with all the information on how to WORK with LATSYM
    and PRTSMB, I still don't know WHAT they are!

    I'll keep searching...

| 245.5 | LATSYM and PRTSMB functionality | HAN::HALLE | Volker Halle MCS @HAO DTN 863-5216 | Fri Feb 07 1997 14:23 | 24 |
|  |     Tara,

    printjobs are entered to print-queues on OpenVMS. Print-symbiont are
    responsible to read the file to be printed and send the data to a
    printer.

    LATSYM provides the functionality of printing to printers connected to
    the LAN via a LAT-speaking device. The printers can be connected to
    terminal servers (via serial or parallel port) or even can have their
    own LAN interface (and built-in LAT implementation).

    LATSYM also allows the sharing of printers between multiple
    non-clustered systems over the LAN. LATSYM will establish a connection
    to the printer-port via the LAT protocol when starting a print-job and then
    release this connection at the end of the print-job. Connection-requests
    can be queued at the terminal-server and the LAT-session will be
    established, once the printer-port has become available again.

    PRTSMB provides this functionality for printers DIRECTLY CONNECTED to
    the OpenVMS system (serial or parallel port).

    Telling about possible problems is a different story :-)

    Volker.
