| | I'd guess that the NY Times has placed a cookie.txt file on your PC.
If you're running W95 do a Find - cookies.* You'll be amazed at how many content providers
have placed a cookie.

    Speaking of cookies...
Is there a way to permanently disable cookies? I have the "Show an
alert before accepting a cookie." checked, but it is a pain in the rump
always having to select the "Cancel" button. Sometimes I have to do
this multiple times for a given web address.
Any suggestions on where to get some detailed information on cookies,
what they are used for, what information is involved, etc.?
    Thanks,
    Ron

| | Setting cookie.txt (for Netscape) to read-only (attrib +r file.ext)
is one approach. For MSIE you'd probably have to do this with the
    directory that holds the cookies.

Yup. Using this method (read only) with Netscape 3.0 provides the
necessary relief from the cookie monsters!

| | OK - I located the cookies.txt file for Netscape (Navigator, 3.0) and
set its attributes to read only. But I still get those annoying cookie
    pop-ups.

And I don't see any setting in Netscape to not notify me on cookie
    requests. Where's that switch hiding?

    Thanks,

Under Options->Network->Protocol
At least with the PC and OpenVMS version of 3.0
