| 1144.18 | I wouldn't line the birdcage with QuickLink | APACHE::ROY | Gimme 5, I'm still alive!!!!! | Mon Apr 28 1997 08:58 | 33 |
Hi, ref QuickLink......uh!
OK, so it's not just me. I hated it on my old 486, ran fine in
DOS, and like doo-doo in 3.1. I just bought a new system, and was
very disappointed to see it come with the system. The modem is a
US Robotics 33.6 voice.
.11 says WinFax for send and FaxPro for receive.
.13 says WinFax.
What I want is a robust all around piece of fax/modem/voice
software.
Ideally with the voice, I would like to go to multiple levels on
each voicebox. That is, if you listen to the first level of choices,
say, chose #2, and then you get e.g. 4 more choices inside #2. Is this
possible? Is there any SW out there that can do this? If not, then my
next choice would be SW that gives a large number of voiceboxes avail.
Another question. Fooling around with the system yesterday, I
brought up the system monitor and starting watching CPU utilization.
Whenever the QLink FAX MANAGER was started, CPU util. went to 100%
and stayed there. Also, if I started the QLink program to look at/send
a fax, again it went to 100%. If I used the modem to hook to the
internet, it would go to 100% for a short time, and then drop to
expected lower levels. The question is why does QLink do this? (Other
than being a POS?)
Glen(n) (who can't believe a company like USR would stoop to using
SW like QL!!!)

| 1144.19 | polling loop | CSC32::J_MANNING | Mon Apr 28 1997 09:44 | 7 | |
re .18
CPU usage goes to 100% because QLII is a 16-bit program and uses a
polling loop for input.

| 1144.20 | SuperVoice V2 or higher might work | NEWVAX::PAVLICEK | Stop rebooting! Use Linux | Mon Apr 28 1997 11:17 | 13 |
re: .18
SuperVoice V2 or later may be able to do the combined voice/fax/data
work that you need; I don't know for sure.
I have SuperVoice V1 on the DOS/Windows 3.1 side of my box and it
doesn't do all that you want, but I've heard that V2 might do it.
I don't know how well it deals with W95.
There is a note somewhere in here on that subject; the conversation was
around a year or so ago, I think.
