Hi,
Is there any NVRAM in the DEL8X Etherworks Switch that stores the
settings of the speed, HDX or FDX, and so on?
A customer of mine is reporting that several AXP running VMS 6.21H3 having
all of them a DE500-XA 10/100Mb Ethernet connected to a DEL8X Ethernet
Switch does not autodetect the speed and the transmission mode.
Even though I've read in the manual that '...the DEL8x can detect
transmission speed even if the attached device does not support
autonegotiation...' that seems to be the case of the DE500-XA I've told
the customer to force manually the setting in the Switch and the AXP
via Configure Button and LANCP.
After that everything works ok: 100Mb/FDX, but when the workstation is
powered off and on, the Switch does not set up at 100Mb transmission
rate.
The the customer plays disconeccting the cable several times, not only
one as the manual states, and after several attempts the Switch
switches at 100Mb.
Again, is there any sort of storing function of whatever that make this
thing work?
Thanks in advance

| 4408.1 | ALPLAN04 ECO kit | CSC32::J_SOBECKI | John Sobecki, DTN 592-4101, CXO3-2/D2 | Tue May 13 1997 16:38 | 15 |
Hi Jordi,
I'm not sure on the 900EX switch side of things, but have worked this
problem from the OpenVMS side many times successfully.
Make sure the Alpha console firmware is up-to-date, and with the
ALPLAN04 version of SYS$EWDRIVER installed, it will actually preserve
the EWA0_MODE setting for FastFD (100Mbit Full duplex) or Fast (100Mbit
no full duplex) and won't flip-flop on you.
The ALPLAN04_062 kit is in TIMA.

John,
thanks for your reply.
Actually the DE500-XA does work at 100/200Mb in FDX mode when the
customer forces via configuration switch at the Switch side and via
LANCP at Alpha side. The problem arises when the Alpha is shutting down
and powered off, the Switch comes back to 10Mb. I've asked the customer
to not power off the machine to see what is the behaviour.
Having checked firmware rev. on the Alphas , they have , one of the
latest revs -as hw guys said to me- , the 2100 has the 4.7-143 and
two AlphaStation500 have 6.3-11, these has been seen via SDA> CLUE
CONFIG looking at 'Console Vers...'
Next step is send to customer the ALPLAN04...patch kit, but as I
mentioned earlier the DE500-XA does work when forced.
The question is why DEL8X does not store the previous value of this port
manually configured? even the manual says on page 2-5 that '...The
DEL8X can detect speed even if the attached device does not support
autonegotiation...'
Another interesting thing is that customer says that the Switch box
there is NO any label indicating the model or the serial number or the
rev., the only reference is 'Digital Etherworks Switch 8TTX' and 'Made
in Taiwan'
How can we know the rev. levels of hw.? Looking at the board?
Thanks in advance
