2502.0. "who's number one?" by 49872::JRS (John SHADE - 'Attila the Nun') Tue Jul 11 1995 10:55
There's an interesting slide in the enVISN presentation that shows Digital's
share of CY94 market revenue. It claims that we are number 3 in routers, number
3 in hubs and number 2 in switching. Who are the others?
        Routers       Hubs      Switching
        ---------------------------------
  1.    Cisco          ?           ?
  2.    Wellfleet      ?        Digital
  3.    Digital       Digital      ?
Note that market revenue is not necessarilly the same as market share; Cisco
claims that they have 51% of the router market, Wellfleet 15%, and 3Com 7%
(Digital is not mentioned). I realise that these are all somewhat meaningless
marketing figures, but as soon as we claim that we're number three, it's
legitimate to ask who numbers one and two are.
Thanks,
-John

| 2502.1 | maybe Digital will be 1 or 2 in the converged market | NAC::FORREST |  | Thu Jul 13 1995 16:51 | 9 |
| | Cisco is number 1 in switching - they got there by buying Kalpana,
    adding to the share they already had.

    Cabletron and SynOptics (Bay) battle it out for numbers 1 and 2 in hubs
    each year.

    The point of the slide is that Digital is well positioned to be a major
    player in the converged technology market.
