| | Yes, there is a firmware upgrade planned for full RMON probe capability
similar to the Probe 90 for the DECswitch, at an additional cost. No, it
will not be usable for monitoring FDDI (at least for now); only for its
Ethernet ports. The RMON standard currently in place is somewhat
Ethernet-centric -- it does not contain management objects specific to
FDDI. (While some of the RMON groups are independant of LAN type,
we don't have plans to implement these for the FDDI for now.)

    Anil,

I'm concerned about the statement for an additional cost for RMON.
It is my understanding from my customers who are considering other
vendors that they are offering RMON as a feature, not a cost. What do
your sources tell you about this?

| | In addition to the full RMON (and then some) capability Anil described
the switch will implement 4 RMON groups for free. These are the Alarm,
Event, Ethernet Statistics, and Ethernet History groups. These groups
are usable on any/all of the Ethernet ports. And again, they will be
available at no additional cost. This feature makes for a highly manageable
switch. It is not a "probe". Switching performance is not degraded by
this feature. (And since this feature is not available yet, it's subject
to change. No schedule is available.)
As for marketing information, I've heard that cisco sell probe upgrades
for their switches. I've read about other vendors doing this as well,
but I don't remember the company's name. If anyone is aware of *full*
RMON being offered for free on a switch, please let us know.

| | I have some questions:

What do you mean by "full RMON"? My understanding is that
RMON groups for Ethernet are: Statistics, History, Alarm, Host,
Host Top-N, Matrix, Filter, Packet Capture, and Event.

When will the upgrade be available?

Is it true that RMON capability cannot exist with routing option
because of the limitation in memory? Our customer needs routing
    as well as RMON :(

You wrote: "it is not a probe". Does it mean that we cannot use
PROBEwatch to retrieve the value of the RMON group in the switch?

By full RMON, we mean all 9 groups plus Frontier-specific MIB
    additions.

    That is true, sorry.

PROBEwatch to retrieve the value of the RMON group in the switch?

You will need to use PROBEwatch with the full RMON option, but you can
use HUBwatch just for the 4 groups of Stats, History, Alarms, Events.
