Hi,
I'm working on a possible config. with an FDDI ring connecting
three sites (It's a BRS cluster config.). The third site needs
connection from single mode fibre on the FDDI ring to a single
ethernet. A DECswitch 900EF would be ideal if we could put single mode
fibre on it. Can this be done, can we remove the ANSI MIC PMD's
supplied and put on single mode PMD's ?
If the above can't be done then from what I've read here we would
need a concentrator with single mode ring in and ring out, and connect
the DECswitch 900EF via an M port. Either that or two concentrators,
one for ring in to an FDDI backplane segment on a hub, a DEcswitch
900EF in the hub and another concentrator for ring out. Is this correct
?
Thanks for any help/advice,
Euan

| 1675.1 | DECswitch 900EF doesn't use modular PMD's | NETCAD::BATTERSBY | Thu Nov 10 1994 09:06 | 11 | |
The DECswitch 900EF does not incorporate modular PMD's, and thus
you cannot remove as you have assumed the ANSI MIC PMD's. The MIC
optical transceiveers are soldered onto one of the two logic
boards inside the 900EF. There were many physical constraints
(cramming 10 lbs of logic in a 5 lb box...if you wish), that
prevented us from using the modular PMD configuration.
So you will have to incorporate a concentrator to connect the single
mode fiber links, and use multi-mode fiber out front, or use
backplane channels to connect the DECswitch to the concentrator.

or, if you can wait for it, you could use the new high end docking
station that _does_ have MOD PMD's and put single mode in that...

I am also working on a requirement that needs SMF PMD's into DECswitch
900 EF and PEswitch 900. I know the DEF1H will support modular PMD's
but when am I likely to be able to put two SMF PMD's into it.
From what I understand you cannot currently put two DEFXS-AA units side
by side into DECconcentrators or the DEF1H. Someone has mentioned a new
SMF PMD (DEFXS-AB) when will this be available ? I need about 300 early
next year so it's worth a bit of dosh ! Is it posible in the meantime
to install two DEFXS-AA's side by side with some care ?
