    Am I correct in assuming that the DEFAR-AA, whether in a DEChub
    backplane or standalone, needs to be connected to a tap (or DESTA)
    with Heartbeat enabled?  I have found that where people are 
    replacing DEMPR's they are using the same type configuration.
    The documentation does not state anything either way.

    most IEEE 802.3 repeaters require that NO HEARTBEAT comes from the
    transceiver.  Digital' DEMPR, and DETPR both can detect the
    transceiver's heartbeat and figure out what to do with it.  
    
    I don't know about the DEFAR.  I would disable Heartbeat on any
    transceiver going to a repeater, or a DELNI which services any
    repeaters.  Better, I would use a BRIDGE, everywhere you might consider
    putting a repeater.  It will be much easier to troubleshoot in the
    future, and your customers technical people will thank you for it.  Teh
    bridges should have heartbeat ENABLED.
