||======================================= ( remote building )
Fiber ( 6 10-Base-T ports)
( required )
Q1. Any problems with the remote workgroup 10BaseT hubs (DH900 TM, DH90 T,
and DEMON) being connected to the wiring closet hub on each of the
4 floors via UTP to the hub-based DETMM?
Q2. Are the remote workgroup hubs (DH900 TM & DH90 T) manageable down to
the port level using Hubwatch? .... generic SNMP NMS?
Q3. What is the best way to provide the required 6 10BaseT ports to the
remote building via the fiber backbone and still have management to
the port level?
This configuration is for an educational institution. On each floor there
will actually be several workgroup hubs for Labs - up to 24 PCs in a Lab.
For example, on the 4th floor there are 11 Labs requiring workgroup connections
for up to 24 PCs per Lab (DH900TM in DEChub ONE Config), and another 7 labs
requiring 6 PC connections (DH90 T config).
Q4. How would I add a token ring workgroup LAB in the same manner as the
10BaseT work groups with the DH900TM / DH90T / or DEMON?
Any other alternatives are welcomed...
Thanks.

Q1) Check your maximum repeater hops. Since the DEFAR is only on the
backplane Thinwire, a hop from it to any other module in a 900 counts
as a hop. You may need to replace the DEFAR with a DEWGF (fiber
bridge; at which point watch out for the 200 node limit on the
backplane side).
Q2) The DETMM is managable down to the port level whether standalone or
in a hub (standalone it requires its own IP address, in a hub the IP
address is optional since it can be managed using the address of the
Hub).
The 90 Repeaters are managable in a 900 hub (I'll be posting a note
shortly describing the changes from 90 to 900). If they are in a
DEChub90 you need a DECbridge90 in the same hub and a DECagent
somewhere on the network to manage them. If they are standalone they
are not SNMP managable.
Q3) I think that the cheapest solution (now) is a DECrepeater900TM with
a DEChub ONE. Way more ports than you need, but just that is than a
repeater, a bridge, a denma, and a hub.
Q4) For token ring you need a DEChub900 and token ring MAUs (DECmau
900TL) ; if you need to connect it to token rings outside the hub you
need a DECrepeater900{S|T}L; if you need it to connect it to the
backbone and/or ethernet you need a non-DEChub something...
