The MOP console carrier session between the DECagent 90 and its target
(e.g. DECserver200/300) uses normal user interface commands for the
target to accomplish the management. The DECagent 90 translates
    between SNMP and user commands.

The problem is that the DECserver200/300 have one command format
(common to DECserver100/200/300/500/90TL) and the DECserver 90L/90L+
have another command format. The missing piece is the translation
for the commands the DS200/300 use.

| 59.2 | What stops us supporting 200/300...formats? | ONOIS1::GAIRNS |  | Tue Sep 15 1992 04:07 | 12 |
| | RE .1 Thanks for your answer which begs the question:

So what intention (if any) is there to support the other command format
and offer a total terminal server management solution with a single
    graphical interface.

This would help out my customers who are evolving to HUBs but have a
large installation of DECserver 200s and ULTRIX.

    Thanks

| | I am looking at adding the ability for the DECagent to speak DS200/300
MOP. These devices would then show up as an icon on any SNMP management
system. The icon would also have error conditions associated with it.
I do not intend to give a graphical interface to these machines as is
done in HUBwatch.. Given that would your customer be interested in
spending $2500 (one DECagent 90) per 10 DECservers to have them speak
SNMP??? If so, how many would your customer be willing to buy? Please
also send mail directly to me at EMDS::SEAVER.
Note- this is a general question to all readers of this notes
conference. We will proxy for DS 200/300 (and 100s) if there is a
market. You need to tell me what the market is. It is technically
    possible.

| 59.4 | the market is HUGE..... | ONOIS1::GAIRNS |  | Fri Oct 02 1992 13:14 | 21 |
| | I believe that my customer would be willing to buy the product at the
aforesaid price with an initial command for around 10 DECagents.

I see a considerable market for such a product and not only in the
    Ultrix environment.
Any VMS customer who has a distributed network with DECserver 100/200
and/or MUXservers on remote LANs interconnected by routers is currently in
a mess to manage his network centrally (one of my current problems).
Your product is cheaper than TSM on each LAN AND it allows me to
centralise network management on a PC or DECmcc platform.
As the network uses routers (Digitals) I can upgrade the router
software to a WANrouter and thereby send TCP/IP over my network. So the
only real investment remotely is the DECagent.
I don't see any other DECmcc solution coming rapidly to my aid at such
    a competitive price.
So when can I announce it to my customer?

Will anybody else out there back me up?
