    I need to use Performance Monitor statistics to determine 
    the approximate number of messages sent/received on an Exchange 
    Server.
    
    Additionally, the metrics must be divided into two categories:
    local on-node traffic and network traffic that originated or is
    delivered to a separate node.
    
    It is not entirely clear in the documentation which combination
    of the many Exchange counters would achieve this.  Any ideas?

	Why not use the tracking logs and get an exact picture of all the traffic in and out of the server ?.

	Message tracking imposes too heavy of a footprint on the Exchange servers, the customer is not willing to accept the performance penalty. Additionally, we would prefer to have the data reduced before collecting it from several hundred Exchange servers to our central management and monitoring software.

	Look at the MTA counters, it will give you the total messages, and messages per second. You can also look at all the connectors individually with perfmon.
