Hi,
Last night I switched on my Mega ST2 (30 Mb Hard disk), and the
following happened (reproducible):
1. I click on the harddisk icon => I get an overview of folders/files
2. I click on one of the folders => I get a partial overview of
folders/files, i.e. it doesn't
show all of them as it normally did
3. I click on one of the files => system hangs
After trying some things and lots of reboots, but not getting anywhere,
I rebooted, decided to delete all of the .acc files, rebooted again and
on step 2 above, I now did get a complete overview of folders/files.
Trying to run First Word results in 3 bombs (again reproducible).
Reloading First Word software didn't make any difference.
Changing the setup to only the Mega ST2 (hard disk disconnected) the
same problem occurs. Sometimes the number of bombs changes (2 or 4).
I borrowed a 520ST (1 Mb) from a friend, used it with my harddisk
and monitor, and everything works ok. Although the first time I
started First Word, it crashed again with 3 bombs. Reloading the
software cured this problem. This would mean that earlier crashes
corrupted the First Word software?
Does this sound like a memory problem? Any hints?
John.

| 921.1 | maybe the old reseat your chips might work | NORGE::CHAD | Ich glaube Ich tte Ich htte | Wed Jul 18 1990 09:08 | 8 |
I had a similar problem where I could open data files and write them but clicking on any application caused the system to say that the disk was corrupted, check cables blah blah blah (you know the one). Anyway, I have half my RAM in sockets and I reseated it all and the problem went away. Try reseating all your chips that you can. Chad | |||||
| 921.2 | MMU reseating | HAMSUP::MARXSEN | Univ.Milky.Sol.Earth.FRG.Hamburg | Fri Jul 27 1990 18:17 | 7 |
Reseating seems to be a good solution for timing problems.
After having installed a memory expansion my ST crashed at boot
showing two bombs.
After reseating the MMU, the ST worked fine again...

My problem got solved.
Since I'm not very technical, I brought the MEGA2 to a local
dealer, who replaced "a couple of broken RAM-chips". Since he
didn't have them on stock, it took 8 weeks to repair at a cost of $75.
Sounds logical to you tech people or should I get another dealer?

Doesn't sound too bad.
Figure about $35 per hour - To run the diagnostic cartridge, open
the machine and do some basic trouble shooting would easily
consume 30 minutes. Do the paperwork to order the chips and
reassembling the machine and setting it aside, another 15
minutes.
Get the chips in, disassemble the machine, remove the
motherboard, unsolder the old chips, install the new ones, put
it back together enought to run the diagnostic cartridge, finish
assembling the system, final checkout, finish up the paperwork
and call the customer, would consume another 45 minutes.
