| | For VAX to ST transfers, try Whack/Stransf, topic 3.
Do you know what kind of modem they got? It could be one that doens't
allow you to disable xon/xoff. This may cause problems with Xmodem.
Kermit avoids control characters, so it would be okay, STRANSF/Whack
requires that SSU be running, so it would be okay also.

| | This seems like a good place for this note.

I'm having some communications problems. I'm trying to download some
software from a BBS (the BCS board). I'm logging in with my Courier HST
modem at 9600 baud. I'm using uniterm on my ST. When I connect, I get a
message: Connected 9600/ARQ. I can use the board just fine except I
can't seem to get Xmodem to work.

I've set the flow control settings on my modem to non-Xon/Xoff settings
but I still can't get it to work. Has any one else experienced similar
problems. In the past I've gotten it to work at lower speeds (non-ARQ
modes) but I really need the high speed (its long distance).

    Any Ideas??

| | The problem is still xon/xoff. Standard xmodem sends a 128byte block
(or 1kbyte block) prefixed by the block number and the ones complement
of the block number, followed by a checksum or CRC. There is a strong
chance that this will prevent a download. Unfortunately, Michtron does
not have support for windowed xmodem which corrects the problem. I will
check with Harry Steele (the Sysop) to see if anyone else has this
    problem.

| | Hi,
I used to have a 9600 baud modem until a "worm" pulled some strings
and made me bring it back in to DEC (so someone else could take it home).
I could NOT download until I turned off the error correction
(MNP I think)... As soon as I did this, everything worked fine...

| 870.5 | That worked! | ROYALT::ORSHAW | Associate FTSG membership pending..... | Thu Nov 01 1990 14:48 | 10 |
| | Thanks!! That was it. I turned off all the xoff/xon settings and turned
off NMP. ARQ was still enabled so I could still use 9600 baud.

I was able to send files to the board with xmodem. I wasn't able to get
files from the board with xmodem, but ymodem worked. The board doesn't
have the option to send IT files with ymodem. Between the two
protocols, I can get the job done.
