I have a 1040 upgraded to TOS 1.4 and a now defunt internal drive.
the replacement prices from Atari are OUTRAGEOUS!!!. I know that the
"newer" 1040s use SONY drives but my case is configured to only
allow for a center eject button. Any ideas what drive (with a center
eject button) will be appropriate? I have seen other internal (and
external) Atari drives. They are clearly marked SONY or EPSON, etc.
I have NO clue who manufactured my drive. All company names are
missing except ATARI of course who put a sticker on the bottom of
the with the LOT number 57420 stamped on it, Any ideas?

Most of the internal drives are/were Chinon, but you would on
occasion find NEC.

re: .0
I had the same problem a few months ago. I ordered a 3.5" drive (about
200 DM = ~ $ 121), which was modified to use it as an internal drive
(replacing the original Atari drive). Then had to enlarge the slit
for the floppy drive in the top case of the ST so that is is now
a rectangle (by sawing it out). Works perfectly now. I think the
drive comes from TEAC.

White Mountain Computer had replacement internal drives for $110.
My Mega's drive died last night. These are 1040 replacments, no
mods needed, as they have the center eject button. They are
refurbished drives from Atari.
