Hi,
In the UK, ouraged members of the public have successfully got the main
Amiga TV advert banned by the advertising standards authority.
The reason was that the makers of the advert had skillfully combined
film of a child playing a flight simulator on an Amiga, with screen
shots purporting to show the game in progress, which must have been
generated on a CRAY or in a cartoon environment. Certainly the makers
of real flight simulators would have been green with envy at the
"realism".
Commodores defence, was that the screen was depicting what the Amiga
"thought" it was showing!!!
Atari are advertising the 520STFM quite hard, but at childrens peak
time, as a games machine, although there are passing references to
serious software.

Well, I have not seen an atari tv advertisement, I have noticed a new
2 page spread in Electronic Musician magazine. Of course they were advertising
how great a midi machine it is, as well as how much great midi software was
available. It could also be in the current issue of keyboard magazine too,
I havent finished reading it yet.
Atari really blew their chances to advertise when the chain store
Lechemere carried the atari line. As it is now, there are probably very
few places people can go to actually try one out and buy one, so atari is
saying why advertise. Probably the best places to go see one in the US is
in music stores.

The commercials shown in the US all demonstrate software that is
currently available for the Amiga. They didn't use any magic this
time, in spite of George Lucas being the production house.
It's rumored that CBM has budgeted $15 million for the ad campaign,
which was driven by the new CBM USA president, a recent alumnus of
Apple. In fact, he's hired an army of ex-Apple executives to make the
Amiga more successful in the USA.
I hope this doesn't lead to Apple-like prices! One of the nice things
about being the underdog is that everything is cheap...

| Weren't the pointer sisters doing Atari ads? or at least advertised as Atari
users? I know I've seen an article in an Atari magazine a year or so ago
featuring them and how they used Atari in their music production.
Atari can't even keep their spokesman.

Celebrities are such prostitutes... I remember the Pointer Sisters
actually use Atari STs in their productions, not Amigas.
Tip O'Niel has been appearing in every kind of advertising...

| the worst part is that CBM is going for name recognition by
saturation advertising in target markets. Boston is one
of the targets. Between now and the end of December you will
be seeing lots of Tip. I guess they thought Tip was so popular
around Boston that it would help sales to have him in it.
Fortunately they don't let him near the computer.
re: the Pointer Sisters
I saw a behind the scenes video on the making of the ads at
the Amiga BCS meeting. I got the impression that the Pointer
Sisters don't use computers, but their support folks do. So
it is very possible that both STs and Amigas are used.
I miss the old guilt ads - you remember, the ones that imply
that your kid is doomed to a life of failure because you didn't
buy him a computer. Ideal for the Christmas season.
