| | Everybody's probably said this by now, but... this question would get
    better responses in NOVA::COMMUSIC.

    I own a Kawai K-1m. It uses LA (Linear Additive) synthesis, as opposed
    to the FB-01 which uses FM. The Kawai is very good at 'expressive,
    breathy' sounds, like the 'breathy flutes' you seem to hear
    everywhere. It's very similar to the Roland D-10. The patch system is
    fairly complex, but it's like this: you get 8-note polyphony with
    'complex' sounds, or 16-note polyphony with 'simple' sounds. I'll enter
    more later from home where I have the docs...

| 563.2 | MT-32 not a bad box | COMICS::DSMMGR |  | Wed Aug 09 1989 03:55 | 22 |
|  |     Hi Kev,

    Re the Mt-32, waddya wanna know ? I have one and find that there
    are some very useable sounds in it (128 in all + Drums/Percussion).
    I can't really remember all the great ones by heart, but if you
    want to give me your DTN/VAXMAIL node then I'll be glad to fill
    you in and send you a copy of the specs/blurb.

    I hook mine up to my Korg M1 as an expander to get sounds such as
    Orchestra Hit... it also has a nice swelly strings sound that I
    use a lot.

    It is non-frontpanel-programmable, but I do believe there is a PD
    (?) Editor for it as well so perhaps that is also of interest.

    I'm at Viables (basingstoke) on 7833 3002 so give me a call if you
    like. I'm always willing to talk music 8^)

    Hope this is of use,

    Jonathan

| 563.4 | check out COMMUSIC, really | NORGE::CHAD | Ich glaube Ich tte Ich htte | Wed Aug 09 1989 09:07 | 12 |
| | Actually the Kawai is no real LA (linear arithmetic, not linear additive) but
works along similar ideas.
I'd get a D-110. Its a cleaner MT32 and can be had used in the states as
low as $550 or so or even lower (I've seen them at $675 or lower new). It
has a front panel, is rack mountable, cleaner, etc.
The FB01 sounds dated in my opinion. It sounds thin and EF-EMMY (FMy?).
Check out NOVA::COMMUSIC and do a dir/title="K1", "110", and "FB"

| 563.5 | Mt32 PD Editor? | CALYPS::SHARPE |  | Mon Sep 04 1989 13:11 | 5 |
| | I have an MT32 and was interested in hearing that there is a PD editor
    for it. DO you know where I can get my hands on it? Thanks in
    advance.
