I am aware of the other Note on memory upgrades, but since it Atari
have released another new board design on the unsuspecting public,
the old note is nolonger true.
I have one of the new design 520STFM's - instead of 16 *256kb chips
it has 4 * 1meg (4/256) chips and to make things even more difficult
they have switched to surface mounting. Has anyone upgraded one
of the new boards to 1 meg yet and if so can they post details of
the upgrade here.
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi,
I was one of the lucky ones, all I had to do to my 520 ST was to solder
another row of 256 K chips on the top of the existing chips. I have not
seen any info on anyone upgrading the 4*256K pack variant.
However. Is there any signs of unused mounting pads for an upgrade. If
you remember the 520stfm's prior to the new design had a complete set
of holes ready to install the chips in.?
If there are no available mounting pads then you would have to consider
either making or buying an add on/in PC board.
There is a plug in add-on memory board available from many dealers. I
have an advert in front of me from E.A.Brown. this is a 1-4 M
solderless RAM board. for original ST's . OH OH, reading the ad, it states
you have to pull the MMU chip and the Video shifter out of their sockets
and install them in sockets in the memory board. . I BET THE MMU AND
SHIFTER ARE SURFACE MOUNTED AS WELL in your STFM.
Try giving Atari a bell in Slough, ask for Les PLAYER Atari Support
manager, and give him a hard time..!!!
Sorry I dont appear to have much help for you.

| 447.2 | Upgraded in half a day. | BAHTAT::REID | Tue Apr 25 1989 09:04 | 10 | |
I have just had a call from the 16 bit centre in Harrogate 0423
531822. They have just upgraded my machine in half a day for 120
pounds. As the chips are 28 pounds each that only 8 pounds for labour.
They also turned it round in under half a day.
I am now the owner of an 1040STfm without the badge.
regards
