| (1) UNITERM is a popular PD terminal emulator that supports KERMIT.
I would assume it's available in the UK but I don't know for
sure. The place I bought my ST (in the States) was happy to
give me a copy of UNITERM (and a few other PD files) when I
bought the ST. So ask your salesperson and be prepared to buy
a box of floppies (or bring one) to copy the files onto.
If that fails then post another note here and someone will probably
be willing to copy UNITERM onto a disk for you.
(2) A SS drive (comes in a 520ST, or at least used to) holds 320k and a
DS drive (comes in a 1040ST) holds 740k. I don't know if SEDT
will run on a 520ST.
(3) I assume the PPC is an IBM PC compatible with 3 1/2" disks.
If so then the ST should be able to read the disks. I have heard
that sometimes there are problems if you put files in directories
I'm not sure of the details.
(4) Transfering files via connecting the serial ports on the two
systems is definitly workable. Moving floppies between the two
systems is doable if follow some constraints (I think there
are some notes that give more details about this).

For Spreadsheets: I'd reccomend SHEET and OPUS
For WP: ST Writer is the only PD WP I know of (maybe early versions
of 1st Word, as well?)

I used it on a 512K 520 with a single sided drive before I upgraded
to 1meg w/ DS drive. BTW, I think they're putting DS drives in the
520's now. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

If you can write 3.5" Standard IBM 720K format disks and the ST has
the aforementioned DS drive this is the way to go.

Another option is to Kermit or Xmodem them to the ST using Uniterm
(a free terminal emulator, for the ST)

Don't just look at the ATARI, look at what the AMIGA has to
offer. A real GURU shops carefully so don't think the ATARI
is your only/best solution. The ATARI has an advantage slightly
over the AMIGA when it comes to MIDI, otherwise I personnaly
feel the AMIGA has the advantage when it come to Software,
games, etc. Also the AMIGA is true multitasking. The computers
are similar, so shop and compare before you buy. There are 3
notes files for the AMIGA, some good info on BOMBE::AMIGA.
I am an old ATARI 8 bit user, I as considering an ATARI ST,
before I discovered the AMIGA notes file. It changed my mind
and I wont consider the ST presently.
A friend of mine however purchased an ST because he wanted
it for his music, the ATARI ST is apparently one of the most
attractive computers for MIDI. The ATARI has the MIDI interface
built in, where as for the AMIGA and other PC's you would have
to buy the MIDI interface for the sum of 50-100 dollars.
You may still decide to buy the ATARI ST, it is a good computer
I have enjoyed my 8 bit, but very disappointed in the way ATARI
dropped them, will they do the same with the ST? Many stores
that used to sell them here in Atlanta have discountinued
them. So I suggest you shop slowly... and read the notes files.

| This guy's in the UK, so he won't have the trouble that we have in the
US with finding stores and other support for the ST.
The ST's other advantage over the Amiga is the crisp monochrome display
that makes using the ST as a VAX terminal and desktop publishing
machine so attractive. To make the Amiga tolerable for anything other
than games you have to get a "flicker fixer" (over $400) and a
multisynch monitor. You are very soon very poor that way.

And I believe the Flicker fixer only currently works on an amiga 2000
which is much more expensive than the 500.

| As an aside, and to be fair to the Amiga community, I might add that
the Atari color modes of "medium" and "high" resolution are available
on the Amiga without any flicker, but then again, I also feel that you
need a monochrome monitor on the Atari for it to be useful for anything
other than games. 200 scanlines just isn't enough!

SEDT does run on 520 with a single-sided disk drive and only 512k
of memory - both GSEDT.PRG (GEM SEDT) and SEDT.TTP
All 520s are now coming with double-sided drives.
Over 35% of the midi market is held by Atari, making it the
single largest presence with Apple's MacIntosh being number 2.
If you want to mainly do WP and Spreadsheets, you should consider
a 1Mb or larger machine.

Hi,
I have a son of 9 years old now, and if I like to do something else
as playing together with him, I almost have to kick him off from
the 1040ST (ATARI).
I bought a little 37 cm (14"?)color TV and a tv-modulator. Also
a monitor switchbox with automatic reboot at switch time.
So if my son is playing he's doing this in color(low-or medium
resolution). When I use it I switch to hi-res mono SM124 monitor.
All works very smoothly without hickups
