4932.0. "Not enough milk to go around...." by COASTL::NDC (Putiput Scottish Folds DTN:297-2313) Thu Sep 12 1991 14:12
Another piece of feline info that I was forcefully and unpleasantly
    reminded of recently.

One of the reasons a mother cat will abandon some of her litter is
that she doesn't have enough milk to feed them all. This happened
recently with a cat that I had helped rescue. Unfortunately the
person who was caring for the cat and kittens didn't know what
was going on and didn't ask for help. Four out of Five kittens
    starved to death.

The mother would take all but one kitten to the corner of the room
and leave them there. If the kittens were returned to her she
would push them away with her paws and refuse to let them nurse.

People may mistakenly interpret this situation as one where there
is something wrong with the kittens, but you should never make
that assumption. In this case, bottle feeding *might* have
    saved the litter.
