    	Maybe if you tell us where you live someone who lives in that
    	area can keep their eyes open.
    
    	Also, ask the kids in the neighborhood.  They always know
    	what's going on.  Call the police, local vets, and animal
    	shelter if there's one near you.  Also ask your neighbors
    	to keep an eye out.

    Sometimes they are really close to home and just too scared to come out
    from hiding - I know that happened to mine. Eventually she did come
    out.

    Hi...
    Thanks for all your help.  I'm going to the house across the street
    and talk to my neighbor if she has seen her.  Her cat and my cat
    play togrther.  We talked about this also.  Last night when we
    were looking for her we saw the other cat but not her!
    
    I live in Worcester on Pilgrim Ave. off of Hamilton St.  I know she
    is afraid of other people because she was mostly a house cat until
    this spring.  She's a little over a year old.

    I know how you feel - one of my cats disappeared once, but the vet
    told me not to start worrying til she was missing for a month.  She
    was right too, because Florence came home after an 8 day vacation!
    I lived near a lake at the time and a few blocks away there were some
    summer homes.  On labor day, Florence went out and didn't return.
    It turns out that she got into someone's summer home by accident and
    they were closing it up for the winter.  She stayed in the house
    alone without food or water and finally hurled herself against a
    window to get out.  She was none the worse for wear (she was an
    overweight cat at the time and wasn't even dehydrated - she probably
    drank from the toilet) except for a gash on her belly where the
    window cut her.  I had all of the neighborhood kids out searching
    for her, put ads in all the local papers and offered a reward. 
    She ended up coming back all by herself (brave little thing) and the
    owner of the house (who returned to shut down all the water and other
    stuff) even came by to see her.  He refused to let us pay for the
    window she had broken.  I was so relieved to hear her meow at the
    back door the night she came home.  It's amazing, but they always
    know how to get home.  Perhaps your kitty just went out to seek a
    little adventure???  Keep the faith.

    Check at all the shelters in town, visit if possible and with a
    photo, describe any features particular to your kitty.  A few weeks
    ago, in the Boston Globe, some kook decided to rid the neighborhood
    of an excess of pets (dogs and cats) by taking them to shelters with 
    a variety of stories (that sounded legit).  They were discovered and 
    are being charged.

    what to do if your cat is missing.

    Talk to your neighbors for some distance around -- cats roam over a
    several block area, I think -- at least leave Xeroxed notes at under
    their doromats, etc. (not in the mailboxes -- that's illegal and
    some noot nice mail carriers will confiscate them).  Ask the neighbors
    to check their garages, basements, sheds, any place a cat could get
    accidentally shut in.  That's often what happens when a cat goes
    missing.
    
    Also visit (as opposed to calling) local shelters.  They
    have so many cats that they often can't do an accurate id over the
    phone.
    
    Send posters to vet's offices, police animal control, put an ad in the
    local paper.

    Look all over your house too.  Our kitty was stuck in the basement for
    a week straight.  We searched all of the outside, but never thought he
    could of been in the house somewhere.  We hardly used the basement in
    the winter and that's why we didn't know he was there.

    It's a horrible thing to have to do but check the Humane Society
    DOA list as well as the found listings as often as possible.  And
    look in an approx. 10 mile radius around your house.
    
    When my sister's (Jaci's) dog got lost it was suggested that we
    look for her in a 10 mile radius around her house.  We circulated
    the area handing out flyers with her pictures, and posting them
    in stores and on telephone poles.  It had been more than a week 
    when we found her and we hadn't thoroughly seached more than about 
    1-1/2 miles of the area.  She was found at the local Humane Society.  
    Jaci had been going daily and checking all the found animals and 
    the DOA listing.  Duchess had been hit by a car (unfortunately she 
    was on the DOA list) in an area about a mile or two further out than 
    we had searched.  Her description on the DOA list was not very detailed
    but we just had a feeling it might be her so we went to identify
    the body.  Our local Humane Society keeps the animals that are killed 
    for up to 10 days for any chance of identification before they send 
    them to be buried/cremated.  We were able to claim the body and 
    arrange for burial/cremation.  It was a very sad ending but at least 
    there is some comfort in knowing what happened.

    Good Morning......
    
    I just want thank everyone that wrote in.  My daughter and myself went
    out at dusk last night looking for the cat and found her across the
    street in the neighbors yard.  She was hurt very bad and crying.  She
    got hit by a car probably the day before yesterday.  We took her
    to Tufts and....... We had to put her to sleep.
    
    We're so sad...

    What terribly sad news...  I know how badly you feel and what a
    tough decision it was that you had to make.  I'm sure your kitty
    knows that you love her and miss her very much.  It will take a
    long time for this pain to go away, but as so many of the great
    folks in this file have already told me "someday when you think
    of her, the tear in your eye will be replaced by a smile on your
    face."  You have all of my sympathy...

    I just read this note and understand totally how you feel.  My Black
    Thunder got out sometime around 1:00 AM and I didn't realize it until
    2:00 AM when I was getting ready for bed (I work evenings).  I
    *FINALLY* found her around 3:00 AM and was so glad to see her...  I was
    so worried about her being out with all the late speeders and the dogs
    and the skunks and the racoons, etc...  She is an indoor, declawed, has
    no fear, kitty.  Thank goodness I live in a Mobile Home Park where
    there isn't alot of traffic but the late nighters still go roaring past
    my home.

    We too lost a cat who went way away from home and out into a busy 
    street.  I was on a business trip and my husband found her.  He
    didn't dare tell me over the phone, so he picked me up at the
    airport and I had a good cry on the way home.  It was so sad
    not to be able to say goodbye, but probably easier not seeing
    her hurt so badly.
