|  |     No this is not extreme.  Ear mites are extremely contagious. Also,
    mites are microscopic.   What you see is the mite "droppings" in the
    ear.  The clean ear could have mites already, you just wouldn't be able
    to see them until they start excreting.
    
    I would follow the vet's advice and treat everyone in both ears.  That
    way, you won't find out in a month that another of your pets has them.

|  |     Yes, I agree too.  Ear mites seem mild but they have the potential to
    do some serious damage.  Knock 'em out fast.

|  |     They told you this because the little buggers get passed
    from 1 pet to another before you can blink an eye.....
    Just like fleas, you need to treat all of them to get rid
    of them!!!  (I had fun with this when the kittens I brought
    home gave it to my other two...yuck)
