3897.0. "Eosinophillac Plaque" by CSSE::CST () Tue Aug 14 1990 09:26

    Poor Ruby came home last night from the vets with a diagnosis of
    eosinophillic plaque.  Besides this I was told she isn't pregnant!
    Both are bad news but with one we will try again and the other, well,
    we will hope for a quick cure.
    
    Hopefully someone out there will have had an experience with the this
    skin disease before.  What I do know is that it is not a fungus,
    bacteria or virus.  The vet says it is unknown why cats get this
    disease but that it's something like an immune system fight against its
    own skin.  
    
    In baby cats it takes the form of a granuloma in the groin area and at
    the early years this plaque form.  Later in life they form as "rodent
    ulcers" in the mouth.
    
    Treatment so far is with cortisone (dep).  Anywhere up to three times. 
    If this doesn't work Dr. Holub suggested the use of Ovaban which he is
    very much against using in a whole female (possible complications).
    
    The other side of the coin is that we tested for ringworm but he
    doesn't feel strongly that this is the cause of her sores.  But, three
    hairs in the center of the patch glowed rather well!
    
    Any one know anything else??

    Can this plague be passed along to other cats and/or is it

    I don't believe that another cat can get it, Maybe cat specific.  I
    asked the vet last night if it could be a hereditary thing and he said
    there wasn't too much known about it but that at this date it hasn't
    been proven.  Basically not to worry.

    Question, is it wise to breed her while she is having a eruption of
    this?  Could it cause problems in kittens while she is pregnant.  (I
    ask this because if it is an autoimmune disease, this could cause
    problems, check with your vet.)

    She cannot be bred while on Ovaban or most other medications.  I
    think that once the problem clears up, it would be safe to breed
    her.  Of course, there may be a risk in that stress may bring it
    back.  So many kitty disorders are brought on by stress.  Then,
    on the other hand, being in heat and not being bred is very stressful
    too.

    You might want to read note 3757 as my Vet seemed to believe that my
    Willy had/has this.  We never went for a biopsy as it disappeared.
    However, another section like that appeared right after him & Mitty
    (our other cat) were horsing around.  That spot seems to be healing now
    also.
