Last night as I was watching TV, a preview for the next 2020 review
was broadcasted. It was called "Kidnapping of Family Pets". They
claim this this is a nation wide problem. It seems that these horrible
experimental labs are being supplied with pets that people are stealing
and selling to these awful places. I don't know about any of you, but
I can not even watch this kind of stuff, I get so upset. I donate
money to the MSPCA, to Greenpeace, to various shelters, to a number of
other agency that send literature to my house. I have written to my
Congressman, sent postcards, the whole nine yards. But what can one do
about people who have no conscience and can steal someone elses pet and
sell them into misery?? What is this world coming to? I also
understand that one must be careful of who responds to newspaper adds.
These could be people who plan to sell the animals to the labs.
I wish there was some way to stop this cruel treatment of animals.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Regards,\
Arlene

| 3792.1 | Human SLIME worked Central Mass recently... | MCIS5::MCDONOUGH | Fri Jul 13 1990 09:11 | 29 | |
The ONLY way that I know of to stop this is for legislation outlawing
the experimental labs. 99.9% of these are totally unnecessary, since
the so-called "experiments" that they are performing are useless and in
most cases have been made obsolete by the availability of cell-culture
and computer modelling. Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore has done
MUCH in the area of computer modeling and cell-culture tests.
This is a VERY BIG problem, and this last fall and winter a
dog-napper was working the central Mass area, and over 200 dogs were
reported missing. Although there was no mention of cats, these slime
have no compunctions about taking cats as well, although they may have
a bit harder time capturing cats than dogs, who will many times respond
to a food offer, whereas a cat probably would not. At the risk of
starting the "indoor/outdoor" war again, this is but another reason why
my animals are ALL "indoor" ones---all 14 or them! These human-slime
who kidnap animals are typically after the "easy" mark, and will not
normally break in and steal animals, although they have been known to
go into yards and take dogs that are tied out on runs. But they are
smart enough to realize that breaking into a home is burglary, and they
are not usually willing to risk 10 years in prison, since there are so
many easier marks for their slimey robbery.
This state has laws against this practice, but the kidnappers who
work this state sell many of them in Pennsylvania, where it is not
against the law to use un-registered animals. Letters to the Pa.
Governor would maybe help to stop it there, or to the Pa. legislature..

Contact PETA (People for the Ethical treatment of animals) and
PCRM (Physicians committee for responsible medicine). I don't
have either address on me but if you can't find it elsewhere let
me know. I'm sure I can at least find PETA's.

| 3792.4 | is this why my sisters dog is missing? | ASABET::C_AQUILIA | Mon Jul 16 1990 12:25 | 22 | |
my sister lives in gladstone missori and on the night of the fourth of
july her dogs supposedly jumped her fence because of the fireworks and
she discovered them missing in the morning. they are both mutts/mixed
breeds and we couldn't figure out why someone would steal a dog like
this. they are both about 2 years old and one of them is a mixed great
dane and st. bernard. (yes, the dog is huge!) and we knew that he
wouldn't voluntarily get into anyone's car. anyways... she got a
couple of radio's to annouce the missing dogs and went to a few
newpapers and put in ads. they also went around the neighborhood in a
15-20 miles radius looking and asking people.
but, to make a long story short... someone finally called about pete
(the st.bernard/great dane mix) and when she got there, there he was...
so excited to see her that for the first time ever he 'jumped' into her
car (kinda like a step for him, he really is a big dog) and roscoe the
other smaller dog is still missing. they are confident though that it
was the fireworks that made them run away. i thought so too
considering that i've heard many animals don't like that sound and my
father's dog has run away several times for the same reason.
now i'm not so sure.

Re: .4
This is why animals should be confined indoors around the 4th of
July and New Years.

re: .4 - It is possible that the same fate that befalls some missing
cats has befallen the other dog - ie. he could be locked in someone's
garage.
Good luck
