I thought I'd add this to show that once in a while they do come back.

On Feb 19, my Hobbes disappeared. In the next few days the temp
dropped to 0 F and we had some nasty weather. I called around, and
    placed ads.

12 1/2 days later at 2:30 on a Sunday Morning, I heard noises at the
door and there he was doing fast paced figure eights. When I let him
in he was quite hyper and hungry dashing from bowl to bowl, a bite here
a bite there. He was down to 7 lbs from his 9-10. I now have him back
    up to 10 lbs.

He's pretty long (drinks from the toilet with the seat down while
standing on the floor) so 10 lbs doesn't make him look fat.

Within minutes of the first time I let him out again he was eating a
mouse (yuck). He's back to himself for disposition: jumps on the bed
and pushes his head under my hand at sunrise.

| Glad to hear it all ended happily. Any idea why he may have left in
the first place? Was there a change in his environment (new baby,
    kitten, house move?)

i think sometimes the wandering urge just takes them. my stella has
always been a house cat, but when she had the opportunity (I let her
out on the deck), she went off "exploring". she was gone for three
days (not long, but *forever* by a mom's standards). she came back on
monday evening, stood on the deck and meowed until she got my
attention. aside from a few brambles in her tail, she was none the
worse for wear (and had been spayed a year earlier, thank goodness!)
she came in and ate, allowed some joyful petting from mom, then curled
up on the sofa and went to sleep.

her look told me "don't ask what happened", so i didn't...

| 3489.3 | 3 down, 6 to go. | CLYPPR::FISHER | Dictionary is not. | Thu Apr 05 1990 12:39 | 9 |
| The first time Hobbes disappeared, he had [I think] wandered into a
storm drain. I happened to drive back into the condo complex as the
Animal Control Officer (Lisa) was rescuing him. Some kids waiting for
a school bus had heard him. It's possible that he got stuck there
    again. I don't know. I figure he's got 3 down, 6 to go (lives).
Calvin seems to enjoy being the lord and master of the house [as well
as the lady] when he's gone.
