| | Hi Joan,

You should definitely keep your male cat away from the female once she
has been bred, especially since he's continuing to mount her. You
should not leave them together at all. Cats are induced ovulators, so
allowing them to breed may cause her to be impregnated twice. If that
happens she will be carrying 2 litters that are possibly different
ages. When the kittens are born, they will be different sizes, with
the smaller ones possibly being premature.

If your female is dripping, you should get her to the vet. It is not
normal for a female cat to drip either when she's in heat or pregnant,
and this is a sign of trouble. If this really is happening, please get
her to the vet right away.

You should also continue to keep your male separated from your female
after she has her kittens because she will probably come back into heat
shortly after delivery. If she is left with the male, he will breed
her again and she will get pregnant. That would be very unhealthy for
both the mother cat and her kittens.

You may also want to consider having your male cat neutered, since he
will be very unhappy having to be confined. Your female will not be
ready to breed again for quite some time, and your male will become
frustrated and will probably begin to spray (if he hasn't already.).
One female cat is not enough to keep a male cat happy, in order to have
a happy male cat, you have to be able to give him several girls a year.

As far as the male hurting the kittens, some are really sweet, and some
aren't, the most important reason for keeping them separated is because
    of what I said above.

I think you may want to consider learning a little more about breeding,
and the persian breed before you breed the cats again. I'm an exotic
shorthair breeder, and I occasionally have persians. I'ld be willing
to get together with you to talk about persians and breeding in
    general.

Let me know if I can help.

| | Great reply, Cin! Very well stated.

Joan, I am not a breeder of cats but do own 5 neutered males and
agree with everything Cin has said about male cats being very unhappy
if there are not enough females (queens) around to keep them happy!
Unless you plan to start a cattery and breed and show Persians,
my advice would be to have your male neutered and your female spayed
after she is through weaning the kittens (your vet or a breeder
in this file will be able to tell you how soon after weaning a spay
    can be performed).

You will find that there are a lot of knowledgable people in this
file to help you out and offer whatever advice you need. A lot
of the breeders here have helped me through some really difficult
times and I really respect them and trust their judgement.

    Good luck!

    /Roberta
