"Now to Teach Rover to Fetch the Wand" Cat scanner is taking on a whole new meaning. International Infopet Systems Inc. has developed a chip the size of a grain of rice that can be injected into the backs of household pets to provide permanent identification. When a wand - much like a barcode scanner - is passed over the animal's back, the chip emits an identification number that can be checked against the Infopet registry. "The animals don't seem to be bothered by the chip," says Diane Allevato of the Marin Humane Society in California. "And there's a real sense of security in knowing that your cat would never wind up in a research facility."

I guess I missed the reason that a "marked" pet wouldn't end up
in a research facility. Are all such facilities going to guarantee
that they will check for the "markers" before using animals?

I saw a write-up on this a year or so ago. Its a great idea and
once its implemented should make it much easier to return lost
cats to their owners. How many times have we wondered what would
happen if one of our cats got out the door at a show!
