| 2435.1 | Have you really tried everything? | SALEM::DEFRANCO_J |  | Fri May 05 1989 15:49 | 28 |

Oh what a sad note. Just the thought of giving up a 12 year old
friend is devestating. I'm not sure where, but somewhere in this
notes file are some great suggestions for learning how to live with
allergies and cats. I'll go over what I remember, but I'm sure
some of the other noters can add to it!

    1. Don't touch your eyes after touching the cat. Wash hands first!
    2. Don't let the cats sleep with you.
    3. Wash the cats! It helps!
    4. There are some great antihistamines on the market today. Through
a doctor your fiance can get Seldane which clears the head
and nose but doesn't cause drowsiness. It really does work.
    5. Allergy shots! Didn't do much for me, but some people swear
        by them.
    6. And last but not least. I have found that I too am allergic
to cats but have developed a tolerance for my own 3 cats. It
takes about 6 months for my system to adjust to a new arrival.

Maybe you can convince your fiance to give it one more try, if not
I can't take your cats but hopefully you will have luck through
this conference in finding them a good home.

| | I have to agree to .1, I too am allergic to cats. I have seen a
Dr. and he perscribed Seldane (which works great! No more allergy
headaches!) and for my eyes, Baush & Lomb Muro's Opto-con A (SP?)
eye drops (real soothing) and a steriod eye ointment for when it
gets real bad. So far, I don't have a problem w/ my kitty, but
    it's with others....

| 2435.3 | Allergy medications have not helped - unfortunastely | CADSE::KARP |  | Mon May 08 1989 11:24 | 16 |
| | Thank you very much for the suggestions. Unfortunately we have tried
living with them but it hurts me to see Donna unable to breathe and
having to go outside for fresh air. We have a years supply of Seldane
and I've even tried a clothes pin....

It looks as if my choices are the cats or Donna (its a tough choice)
but the cats really do need new homes - Donna is harder to place...

Seriously if anyone out there knows of a home or homes for my cats I'm
getting desperate. All to soon my only option will be an animal shelter
and I don't even want to think about what happens then.

They really are very nice cats and will provide lots of love,
    enjoyment, and affection.

    Mike.

Regarding your older cat... if it goes to the shelter it will be
definately put to sleep. To help place the cat, you might want
to offer to pay its vet bills for anything besides routine things.

| 2435.5 | Will definitily help with vet bills.... | CADSE::KARP |  | Mon May 08 1989 15:02 | 7 |
| | Thats a very good idea. It is definitely important enough to me to find
Havi a good home that I'll help with vet bills for things beyond
routine care. Besides after knowing Havi for all 12 years of her life,
the extra contact, and secure knoweledge of her good care, means alot
to me. Thanks for the idea.

I am getting much to close the point of having to give my older cat to
a shelter. The 'no kill' shelters will not take a 12 year old cat. This
time of year is bad because of the number of kittens on the market.
I've gotten lots of replies about various alergy control mechanisms
including injections, cat free bedroom, etc. These are all very good
sugesstions that we have investigated. Unfortunately due to the
alergies and a pool accident a few years ago Donna's air passages are
such that any presence of dander in the air is very very difficult.
Keeping the cats away, not handling them, just is not enough. Shots will
also be of limitted effectiveness in this case. Whether we like it
or not, and Donna is as upset about it as I am, the cats just cannot
    stay.

My problem is I can find no-one willing to take to older cat the
cat placement services I've talked to, and the no kill shelters
all say there is no way I'll find a home for the 12 year old.
PLEASE PLEASE if anyone out there has a spot for a beautiful
cat, she is fun loving, and affectionite in a very special way
since she is loving only to those she trusts. PLEASE let me know.
I am desperate and after 12 years with this special individual I
just cannot bear bringing her to a 'shelter' cause I know what will
happen. If you'd like to meet Have send me mail or call me at home
    (617) 277 4430.

    Thanks.
