| | I've heard that eating inappropriate things can be due to a nutritional
deficiency. I'd call up your vet and ask him. Maybe the kitten
experts in this file can shed more light.

| | Kittens *always* eat the litter when they are first exposed to it.
Your kittens are no more retarded than mine (uh-oh!), or anyone
else's. It takes them a few days to figure out that they aren't
supposed to ingest it, but to deposit in it instead. It won't hurt
them, and they will eventually outgrow the desire to eat the litter.

I don't think I have ever had a litter of kittens that didn't eat
the litter. Maybe your kittens and mine are the only weird ones...
    Naaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!

| 2421.4 | Liter w/ NO borox | CGVAX2::JOHNSON_S |  | Tue May 02 1989 09:46 | 8 |
| | Well, I had 4 kittens visit me and some other people last night.
I put the liter box out for them to go in and all 4 of them started
eating it. They are 5 1/2 wks old. I took 1 of them from the liter
as the others did also. Mine is still eating the liter. I'm hoping
that it won't hurt him or her. I did resently read that liter with
borox in it can seriously hurt the kitty, so make sure that your
liter doesn't have that in it as it was proved to be toxic.

| | Meggy's kittens all ate the litter, too. My vet said it helped to get
their digestive systems rolling, but he cautioned me to buy litter with
no deodorizers...I used plain Kleen Kitty in the red bag. They found
    it delicious.

| | Callie's kittens all ate the litter too. I asked at the vets about
it and she said that at that age (or any age for that matter) kittens
are curious about everything and they've already sussed that one
of their strongest senses is taste - so they try and eat it to find
    out what it is!

They grew out of it, but she said to stop them doing it when you
see them since it can ball in the intestine if they eat too much.

| | Well, Lyscentia's kittens hit the eat-the-litter stage the other
day. They were chowing down on it so I thought, hey, lets start
teaching them to eat now since they are obviously wanting to munch.
Well, maybe it was a reflection on my cooking, but, they prefered
the litter to the baby food, kitten milk, baby cereal I mixed up
for them. They each took one bite of the mixture, and then headed
off for the litter box for some *real* food.

To make this even more incredible, when I picked them out of the
    litterbox, they screamed in protest!!!

| | Paws, Springer, and Midway ate litter when they were kittens, too.
They preferred some brands of litter over others, so I got the
kind of litter that they liked (to eat) the least.

They stopped eating it at all after a while . . .

| 2421.10 | An opinion ... | ESOCTS::FARLEY |  | Mon May 08 1989 15:49 | 12 |
| | Do you breed cats? If not, may I offer my opinion? I am new to
the notes file and more often than not there are stories about unwanted
and/or stray cats and kittens. The shelters are bursting with them
and many will not get the chance to go to a good home. I guess
I am a firm believer in not adding fuel to the fire. Maybe you
should consider getting your cat spayed. I know I may be putting
a damper on things by saying that because kittens are a great joy!
I happen to love cats - I just hate to hear the stories about no
    one wanting them.

    Just an opinion!
