I currently have a 7 year old male (black/white) long haired cat
who I love dearly. I have decided to get him a playmate. I have
talked to many cat owners to see what types of reations they have
to doing this at such a late age and what sex would be better for
him. He is a fixed male and I have been told that getting a female
would be best for him. Kitty is very friendly and doesn't fight much
with other cats. He still loves to play. I want a friend for him to
play with, snuggle and clean ears with. Any advice as to how to
handle this situration or if I should get a male instead? I will be
getting my little girl in a week or two. She is almost 5 weeks
old, gray & white and has long hair. The owner of the mother &
father is assuring me that the kitty will have a good personality
as both mom and dad do. The father is a hymilaian (sp.).

    Thanks in advance.
    Sonia

| The age of the newcomer is important re. how the old-timer will
react. A friend brought home a stray he found (almost dead) in
Atlanta (we're in Mass.). His 1.5 year old Coon immediately took
to 'mothering' the tiny (but 5 months old, it turned out) kitten.
The kitten's recent maturing and going into heat has shattered this
    relationship, I'm told.
I got a 3 year old spayed female (see earlier notes) for my
3 year old neutered Coon who had previously had the house to himself.
It has taken almost 2 months for them to become friendly (touching
noses, etc). Copy still keeps his distance from Vanessa. Thank
god she had come from a home with other cats and handled the situation
with aplomb and dignity. So, I guess 'it depends'. - Chris
