| My parents just got a leather couch...the cats REFUSE to sit on
it. They tried it once and did not like it. The only way that
they will sit on it, is if you are between them and the couch.
I don't know what it is but they stay clear from it.

My old roommates cat did plenty of sitting on her leather funiture,
luckily he was declawed! It's probably time to keep the doors shut.

| aja has a leather fetish. She LOVES it...
I'll often pick her up and put her on my shoulder when I'm wearing
one of my leather coats/jackets. Although she doesn't do anything
on purpose (scratch, knead, etc.) her claws make little knicks in
the finish and an occasional scratch if she loses her balance.
Heaven is if I toss the jacket on a chair. She crawls up inside
a sleeve and will NOT come out!!
Dark finished pieces will show knicks more drastically than lighter
tones. Black is the worst. My maroon doesn't do much better.
Even if they leave it alone, it can get knicked up just from them
jumping up and down...
Risky proposition...

We have one noticeable scratch on leather seats in the car from
back toes trying to hold on. The fronts are declawed. I don't
trust claws on anything. I would highly recommend regular clipping
of the claws. You can do it easily with nail clippers and a strong
person to hold 'em down while they resist.

| re: .4 I agree with trimming claws. We do it all the time with
our four. Please don't use human nail clippers tho, I find that
it causes the nails to split lengthwise much more than cat clippers.
Please buy the type that are made to trip cat claws.

Don't worry! Nail clipping at my house is no problem. They are
all used to it and I can do it myself with little or no fussing.
Even the new kitten is very good about it.
They all got their nails clipped last night (boy, kitten nails sure
grow fast!) I use the cat clippers that look like little scissors
and it does a good job.
I sure hope this will be enough!

| Our dining room set has high-backed leather chairs and they are
worse for wear from our cats. Whiskie (5 yrs old) sleeps all night
on one of them. They sure do a rough job.
I'd cover the couch *while* it's new.

Oh God!!! I'm beginning to think we made a big mistake!!!!
Oh well!! The couch is being delivered tomorrow, so I'll let everyone
know within the next few days just how much of a disaster we have created
for ourselves!
Thanks for all the input (even though it wasn't all what I wanted

| Jean - I just bought a new couch, too, although not leather (polished
cotton chintz) the cats think I bought it for them. They don't
claw it but when playing, they like to run across it and play hide
and seek in the big throw pillows. Every once in a while I'll hear
the sound of claws sinking into the fabric and I cringe. Luckily,
with this particular material I can rub on the claw mark and it
comes out of the fabric.
I highly recommend a few carboard scratching boxes placed near the
arms of the couch. My kittens have not touched the furniture since
I put the boxes there... they love the feel of their nails sinking
into the corrugated box. These inexpensive boxes have literally
saved my furniture and my livingroom looks great.

| Hi Jeanne!
Sweetie never showed much interest in my leather chair and otterman,
so hopefully your new sofa will be safe. In fact, my boys will only
sleep in that chair if it's covered with a towel.
I'm thinking of a new leather sofa, too...I can't wait to hear how
it goes!

| I have to agree with Edd. My mother just recovered one of my
dad's leather chairs that T-II's been using as an attention getter
("Look Ma, see what I'm about to do?! ;-)") My aunt and uncle also
have a leather chair that has been used as a high hurdle by their
kitty Squeaky. It's dark green with lots of little
kitty-claw-sized nicks around the top (from when she scrambles to
get over)
My kitties seem to leave my leather chair alone, but I don't
think I'd ever get a couch unless it was natural colored so the
nicks wouldn't show. Josh and Becky's track meets always seem to
include the hurdles (races over the couch).

Well, the couch has survived one full day with no problems! The
cats "love" it! They rolled on it, stretched out on it and slept
on it all day yesterday. I think they like the smell of it.
No one tried to scratch it or do any calisthenics on it yet! Hopefully
this trend will continue. I'll keep you posted. And yes, we did
get a light color.
