My cat has neurdermatitis. My vet said it is a stressed related
disorder charachterized by little bumps around his head and neck
that make him scratch, scratch, scratch. Has anyone had to deal
with this with thier cats? And is there anything I can do besides
coritzone shots for him. It started with my move to Florida with
a very stressful trip down here 3 months ago. Any suggestions?

Monroe had stress related skin problems and the vet put him on Megace
(a hormone). We also treated the problem topically with Panalog
cream. It went away in a week or so and he hasn't had any reccurences
(knock on wood).

Could you trace his stress to anything in particular? How long
did he have it and how long has it been gone.

I couldn't figure out what was causing it, but recognized it as
stress because he wouldn't come out from behind the toilet for several
days. We hadn't moved, added new cats, or changed his environment
in any way.
It lasted for only a week or so because I took him into the vet
right away. It took about another week to clear up the resulting
skin problem and for the medicine to kick in. He still hid behind
the toilet in the front bathroom during that period. The condition
has been completely gone for over a year.
A year ago last November we moved into a house of our own and Monroe
did not suffer any recurrence. He has chosen one room in the house that
he prefers to spend all his time in, and is showing some signs of
being afraid of the rest of the house (afraid of the other cats),
but he is showing no signs of the skin problem, or of other health
problems because of it.

I had this same problem with my oldest cat. She has had it three
times in the past two years. Her vet said it could be allergies,
because they occur around the same time of year,fall. It first
happened when she and another one of my cats were outside and the
other cat got killed by a car. We thought she saw it and this is
what started the whole thing, but she got it again this fall, and
again about 1 month later. She is all better now but, I will be
watching for it again next fall.
