| | I got Niky in the house by putting out food every day, moving the food
a litle bit closer each day. Finally, I left a trail of food that went
right into the house, and I closed the door behind him.

| | I caught my cats by feeding them in a carrier and then closing the
door on them. It took a while to get them to the point where they
would eat in there. With the weather being so cold you might want
to try something else. Some of the animal shelters lease out traps
that don't hurt the animal for situations like yours. Maybe someone
else know more about them..("have a heart traps????)

| 2056.3 | Animal Instincts | WITNES::MACONE | It's the story of a man named Brady | Mon Dec 12 1988 14:25 | 13 |
| | Both Portia and Oscar lived through a terrible snowstorm and deep
freeze before I finally rescued them. One thing I have noticed
about there behavior is that when they now go out in cold weather,
they still build themselves a nest to keep warm in - usually under
the neighbors old lumber pile, in amoungst the leaves. They even
do this in the rain - as I sit and worry trying to call them in
and when they do finally come in they are almost all dry.

Definitely keep trying to get the little guy inside where it's warm,
but in the meantime, he has probably found a place to keep warm
and dry, even though it probably lacks the comforts of home.

| 2056.4 | Water in cold weather | CRUISE::NDC |  | Mon Dec 12 1988 15:51 | 10 |
| | Another thing to watch for is water. When the weather gets
below freezing it becomes very difficult for animals to find
water. Try putting out some warm water and changing it when it
freezes. Good luck bringing him inside. I hope you succeed.
Bear in mind that he may always have been a feral cat, in which
case you'll have a tough time getting him to trust you, but keep
    trying, by all means.
      Good luck.

| | A large Hav-A-Hart trap is good (try K-Mart), but PLEASE, do this
kind of thing on a weekend, or at night when you are home. It could
get very ugly if a dog showed up when you're not there...

Also, straw or hay is recommended over cloth bedding materials for
outdoors, because it does not hold as much dampness.

    Good luck with the rescue,

    Cathy

| | please, please keep us informed as to the outcome. All I can think
about right this minute is how *COLD* it was last night and how
*COLD* it is today. The poor baby.

| | If you can get the close enough to the cat while he is buzy eating,
you might just want to grab him, holding tight and ignoring all
bites/and scratching attempts to get away just till you get inside.
Then leave him alone to settle down in a nice safe, warm room with
plenty of food, water and hiding places.

Also wear leather gloves (like the ones used by construction
workers). An upset cat can ripe your hands/arms wide open
and remember this cat has probably been eating birds/squirrels
etc. so be careful about not to get bitten/scratched by it.

    	Best of Luck -

Try leaving out Tuna or something very fishy. and like mentioned
in the previous notes, try to get closer and see what happens.
There was a note about a woman who captured some feral kittens this
past summer or fall ( I forget when and which note - can someone
else remember), maybe you could get in touch with her and try what
    she did.

| | These guys are very difficult to catch. Roberta Waxman was one
of the people in feline who caught feral cats/kittens.

A good suit of armour would be great in a situation like this. Just
goes to show you sometimes the old things are best!!!
