| | What do you mean, not being able to keep him?

Is he being brushed daily, to keep the loose hair combed out?

| | Mocha my Ragdoll has long hair and it is VERY soft, with a soft
undercoat. He hates to be groomed, (but we do it anyway) and
give him femalt once a week. It smell strange but he wil lick
    it off my finger.

Don't give up when you find something that works your problem is
    over.

| | I have two long haired cats, a Maine Coon and a Birman. Neither
needs daily grooming since they don't mat, no undercoat on either.
But they do get hairballs. It sounds strange, but I give them white
petroleum jelly. Yes, just generic Vaseline. They love it. I give
it to them 2 or 3 times a week. This really helps keep hairballs
to a minimum. And the vet said it's fine, Petromalt and the other
stuff is just petroleum jelly with malt and codliver oil. And this
    is so much cheaper.

If they don't get it, the Birman climbs on to my nightstand and
starts knocking things off, looking over at me after each item hits
the floor. He's a little terrorist!

| | I have two Persians, both get brushed regularly (I keep a brush near
the TV) and I give them Petromalt once a week. Every once and a while
they still spit up a furball but no big problems. The key to
preventing the problem is to groom.

| 1624.6 | Hairballs can be controlled... | USMRM2::ESILVA |  | Mon Aug 08 1988 09:53 | 5 |
| | Even short haired cats can get hairballs if they aren't brushed
or given vaseline...I don't brush my three, but I do give them vaseline
once a week to help control the hairballs.

    Hope this helps.

| | Hi, Jo.

He belonged to my spouse (and his ex-wife) before I came on the
picture. His name is Erick T. Blue and he is introduced in 2.28.
I believe he came from Min Nyo (sp) in Falls Church (?) Virginia.

I've been wishing you were on the right coast [ :-)] 'cause I've
been thinking about another kitten and Birmans are very high on
my list. I think there is a Birman breeder in Manchester NH. I should
check it out one of these days.

| | Tamzen, where are you located? I can't remember who the breeder
is behind Min Nyo but I know alot of breeders in Virginia. I will
be in Virginia visiting Birman catteries next week.

Don't let the distance fool you. I have been known to ship kittens
if the home was a good one 8^). If you would rather look into more
local breeders let me know. I do know quite a few out there.

By the way - The Annual Sacred Cat of Burma Cat Fanciers Show will
be held on August 27-28th in Medina Ohio. This is a Birman lovers
dream show. Over 75 Birmans all in one place! I will be attending
with Grand Champion Pleasantview's Kalliste of Mysinhs and Mysinhs
    Lyscentia.

| | I'm in Nashua, NH. I'm going to pop round to the cat show this weekend
in Manchester and see what shows up. I think there is one Birman
breeder in NH and a couple in New Jersey, which is only 4-6 hours.
    ;-)

I'm still looking and thinking and trying to convince my husband that
we do want another. One thing that's sort of a possibility is that
we may end up working in Europe within the next several years. Now
France is okay to take the cats to, but if it's England, with the
9 month quarantine...Well, I wouldn't subject the cats to that.
Jon's folks would likely take them for us for a few years. And 2
cats sounds less intimidating than 3 somehow.
Don't worry, I consider you a resource. ;-) When it comes down to
    it, I'll let you know.

| 1624.11 | Another vouch for Vaseline to remedy furballs | CPDW::BIRSE |  | Tue May 02 1989 14:57 | 15 |
| | I have a black hymalian and I too give him vaseline a couple times
a week. Before I started doing this he was choking on furballs at
least once a night (I don't know how many times during the day) and
I got very scared. He never vomits them, and that makes me more
nervous. But I try to brush him atleast once a day. Even though
he HATES it and we end up battling and he inadvertantly gets the
brush in the face or something. I do what I can to help with the
fur balls. The vaseline is working however, and our vet too, says
it's ok. The other brands of furball remedies are just petrolium
based with a nice taste, he said.

Good luck. Don't give up!!! It's not easy!
