| I agree with Karen's approach only don't try it with another cat
person as we're on to you!! I was once visiting a friend of a friend's
home who didn't know I had cats myself, and when the cat jumped
up on the table he said,"why isn't this amazing, Missy never!! did
that before!!!!" I thought I'd burst trying not to laugh as I've
used that line myself. Before I had cats, I believed people when
they said that, but now.......

| We have had a few problems with our new kids too. The worst is
the 'get on the lap while we are eating' trick. We tried gently
pointing out the merits of better behavior, but will have to escalate
the lessons. Two nights ago, I ended up (quick little beggars too)
with a pure black Max in the middle of my plate! Fortunately the
food was light colored - he got an A for presentation.

| Two of mine sort of beg, and Gonezo will place his front feet on
my leg and nudge my arm, and then quickly sit down as if he'll get
a treat for this trick. Barney, on other hand, has lately taken to
stealing my seat during dinner. Whenever I get up to get something,
he's immediately lying down in my seat (they know not to steal from the
plate when someone is close by). I think this is Barney's way of
begging. Ben is the best - he just sits and watches us eat.

| Both my cats will beg for food as well. The trick is to ignore
their actions and they will stop. I have found that if I ignore
Spaz's begging, she may drive me crazy for one or two meals, but
her begging tones down and stops. Unfortunately as soon as you
give a bite of your plate, you have to use extinction all over again.
Consistency is key to cat management, because they will immediately
pick up on inconsistencies. Everyone in the house has to do the
same thing too, or it won't work.
Another thing that worked, is rather than give food off the plate,
give them a Pounce. They eat a couple, realize they aren't getting
your Chicken, and leave you alone!
