My youngest kitty, Gizmo, has enough skin for two cats - I don't
suppose it's possible that he could be part bloodhound! I have
no idea what his background is (see note #454) since he was rescued
from an attempted drowing in the Assabet.
He has grown to be a pretty fair sized kitty and has even grown
enough that his ears don't appear double-sized, but he still has
so much excess skin you can pick up big rolls of it - no he's not
fat, but not skinny either and very muscular.
Anyone ever seen that before? Even the vet commented on it but
had no explanation.

I don't have any explanation, either, but my grandmother had a barn
cat that had a very loose hide all his life. It was positively
grotesque when he was very young, but he grew into most of it.
He was king of the farm, though, because the other cats couldn't
get a good grip on him in a fight. [kind of like those little Chinese
temple-lion dogs]

Loose skin is a survival trait in all cats, though I imagine it
varies in degree from cat to cat. As indicated in .1, it makes
it harder for other animals to get a controlling grip on the cat.
It increases the chances that a bite will just damage skin and not
cause internal injuries. Finally, the loose skin is necessary for
the beautiful flexibility of a cat.

Our burmese, Sura, had masses of loose skin when we first got him
(he was 12 weeks old); so did the rest of the litter (seven kittens
in total). He slowly "grew into it", though it's still possible
to pinch folds of skin on him, which has never been the case with
Kimi (the Abyssinian).
