| 981.1 | Barn cats appear to be more hardy | AQUA::GOLDMAN | Matt Goldman | Tue Dec 22 1987 09:41 | 8 |
| | That's funny ... I always thought that "barn" cats lived longer because they
were more hardy!
I have knowledge of both purebreds (planned breeding) and HHPs (from indoor
types only, all the way to barn only). Cursory information has led me to
believe that "barn" cats typically live longer.
Of course all felines are susceptible to illnesses ...

| | I don't know, but I would have thought that the reason barn cats
    do not live as long is that they are less cared for - they do not
    have their innoculations, go to the vets when necessary, and so
    on. Also, they are more likely to have accidents and get into fights.

    But as pets, I think they live as long as any other cat, if not
    longer because they're tougher. I always understood that pedigrees,
    such as Siamese, had a shorter life.

| 981.4 | too many, too often | TOPDOC::TRACHMAN |  | Tue Dec 22 1987 13:03 | 5 |
| | It would seem that part of the problem is that barn cats reproduce
    much more often - producing litter after litter. The queen can't
    feed them properly, can't pass immunity to the kittens because
    she may not have it to pass, and so on causing a weak strain of
    kittens.

| | Siamese are typically long-lived. My last one lived to be
    19.
