For all of you who kindly responded to my request for advice:
********** THANK YOU **********
I would rather thank you individually, but this will have to
suffice - your advice, well wishes and prayers are very much
appreciated!
Update on Thing's condition:
I have spent the past four days practically attached to her,
including a couple of nights sleep on the floor. I have been
diligent in the therapy/massage of her leg, and doing all the
doctor ordered. But Thing has been the visible barometer of her
ability to recover - she has been able to both eat/drink and
urinate, so her bodily functions seem to be almost normal again.
Two days passed before she was able to eat/drink, so I was a bit
concerned there for awhile. Her "awareness" has returned, her
breathing is more normal, so with the exception of her leg she is
making excellent recovery. That is enough reason for joy in itself.
Perhaps I am too optimistic in this next statement, but I am beginning
to believe she will be able to use that leg again! There is actually
an element of pain in her leg when I move it a certain way, and
there is a slight hint of resistance (occasionally) when I push
against the pad of her foot. She still drags the leg around whenever
she attempts to climb into the litter box, but that is the only
time she really moves at all - she is content to rest and minimalize
movement - I figure kitty knows best. I will continue the therapy
regimen until I return to the Vet on Thursday. My feelings now are
to continue therapy until the leg works again, at this point I don't
think I would choose to opt for amputation. However, if worse comes
to worse, then amputation it will be. I am convinced in my own heart,
and from the encouragement of those who responded, that Thing will
live and be happy regardless of how many legs she has.
Thank you all again for your encouragement and advice, and thank
you especially for your prayers - Thing's recovery is progressing
amazingly fast, I have a feeling the Vet will be very surprised
to see the difference come next Thursday. I am observing her closely
on almost an hourly basis, and I find myself continuously amazed
at her rate of recovery. When the saga is over, I will drop you
a note (via a reply in this entry) and let you know the outcome.
In your debt, Marvin

Oh boy, what great news! And, what a lucky little kitty thing
is to have you who cares for her so well! I'm sure she senses how
much you are pulling for her and her valiant efforts are for your sake.
Good luck! and keep us posted on her recovery. It sounds as though
you are out of the woods! :-)

Greetings everyone ....... the Thing saga continues:
Actually, I could say the Thing episode has ended! As much as I
enjoy all your communication, I could safely say that as far as
the dilemma described in note 953 is concerned, it has resulted
in the Happy Ending. We can certainly utilize all your good advice
and encouragement for anyone else who undergoes a similar experience,
just address 'em to this note and #953 ......
Present status: Thing is roaming about like her livlihood was never
jeopardized in the first place. I had a feeling she was on the road
to recovery the day I attempted to return her to the Vet. As I have
stated before, Thing is the type of cat that runs at the slightest
motion, sound, gesture - just about anything - so taking her to
the Vet is like trying to take a wild animal to a zoo. As soon as
I placed her in my car, before I could close the door, she leaped
out and vaulted over the neighbor's fence (about a 2 1/2 ft. fence),
it wasn't easy for her, but her adrenaline was working just fine
and off she went. Just like Thinger .......
I didn't see her for two days since she was "hiding" probably thinking
I would stick her back in the ol' auto. Anyway she finally showed
up (for food, what else), and instead of dragging the leg, she was
sort of hobbling on it. I looked at it carefully and it had regained
strength. Well, to make the story bearably short: I see Thing every
day now, her leg is usable - not the same, but it "works" - who
knows, in time it may return to normal. She is not as fast as she
used to be, but is fast enough it appears - and more importantly,
she seems to be the same Thing (her nature & vitality) that she
always was. Cats are certainly survivors, this was a good object
lesson for me .......
Thing is doing great ...... Thank you very much for all your kindness
and concern! May the Lord bless each of you and keep you and yours
in the best of health.
