Does anybody know about sprinkling salt on carpets to get rid
of fleas? I heard something about this but don't remember the
details. Supposedly this dries out the flea eggs.
Thanks,
Fern

I have heard of using Garlic, but never salt....I'ld be interested
to know how it works.
I'm sure it smells alot better than the garlic!!!

I'd be willing to bet that salt does help. Whenever we have problems
with ants in our kitchen, they seem to be attracted to the salt
and it seems to be a fatal attractio.

If vacuumed up before excessive (very, very little) traffic has
a chance to grind it in, the salt will brighten the colors...
From ...Heloise, et al. It does work; I tried it on an apartment
carpet once.

I recently read about powdered borax being used to kill fleas/flea
eggs by dusting the carpets with it. I can't remember where, if
I do remember (or run across it again) I will attribute it in a
separate note.
I would think that salt might do more harm than good, I think it
is slightly harder than borax, and more "sharp" in configuration,
so might cut carpet fibers.
I seem to remember that the article recommended an application
duration, then vacuuming, then another application at a later time.
During my vacation in August, I de-flea'd the house and tha cats
by the following:
o went to see vet -- got recommendations and bombs, plus a
spray for under couches, corners, floorboards, etc.
Cost $60.00 for bombs, $12.00 for spray.
o packed up the cats, and closed the house. Sprayed and bombed,
left instructions to cleaning person to thoroughly vacuum
everything, and clean house the Thursday before we were due
return (original bombing done on a saturday -- about 12 day
later)
o took cats to main, shampooed them, put new collars on them.
(we had them on an island, no other animals, except an
occasional mouse)
o result: no fleas since. (Shampoo cost $5.00). Total out-of-
pocket costs $77.00. Plus, we enjoyed having the cats with
us so much, they will come with us to the island every year
for as long as we go, and they are able to go.
