| 339.1 | Shelter in Salem, MA | AKOV68::FRETTS |  | Tue Sep 30 1986 15:43 | 19 |
| | The only shelter that I know for sure does not destroy the animals
    is the North Shore Animal Shelter in Salem. I adopted a kitten
    from this shelter, and I had to go through an interview before they
    would let me take Sammy home. And they called on a regular basis
    for quite some time afterward to check up and see how we were doing,
    and also assisted with some problems we were having getting him
    "potty" trained.

    I do know that very often they are filled to capacity and you have
    to be put on a waiting list, so if your friend is interested, I
    would suggest she call right away. I'm sorry I don't have the
    phone number handy.

    Also, I can check with a friend of mine that knows a woman who takes
    in cats. She lives in Framingham. Will let you know what I find
    out.

| | I believe that the name of this shelter is actually the Northeast
    Animal Shelter (as opposed to the North Shore ...). We also got
    a kitten there, and had a similar experience. As a matter of fact,
    they asked for a character reference, and wouldn't give us the kitten
    until they checked the reference!

| 339.5 | Shelter in Sterling, MA | LOOKUP::ICS | Gita Devi | Wed Oct 08 1986 09:57 | 26 |
| | Here's another shelter that promises not to destroy any animal unless
    the animal is so sick that it would be more humane to do so. I
    brought a stray there and had great success.
    The cat I brought in was a full grown neutered male, DEAF, suffering
    from an eye infection. He was also sweet-natured and very
    affectionate. He didn't even claw me as we attempted to get him
    into a box, and didn't make a sound during the whole trip to the
    place.

    Anyway - the shelter took care of his eye - they have a vet who
    looks in on the animals daily, and sent me a note after they placed
    him.

    You are asked for a donation to help support them. You supply the
    $$ amount you can give.

    I was quite impressed with the place. Separate quarters for cats.
    Large cages, clean, with play toys inside. Both indoor and outdoor
    kennels for dogs.

| 339.6 | More info on Sterling Animal Shelter | MILES::DIPIRRO | Developing new products at DEC is like slamming a car door on yo | Mon Apr 06 1987 08:26 | 8 |
| | I just brought my two cats to the Sterling Animal Shelter described
    in .-1. I was also impressed with the place. They now request $25/cat
    in cash and food and litter for 1-2 weeks.

    I would encourage those looking for pets to visit this shelter and
    give an animal (or two) a good home.

| 339.7 | Twice as good! | USWAV1::SERRA | Tom Serra -BXO- 224-1558 | Mon Jul 20 1987 12:45 | 13 |
| | I just thought that I would leave a quick note while I was thinking
    of it (this seemed as good a place as any). For anyone thinking
    of adopting an animal through a 'No Destroy' shelter (or any other
    for that matter) that accepts their money in the form of a donation
    (some are set at minimums, others just request what you can afford),
    please don't forget to bring and fill out a 'Matching Donation'
    form from Digital. Digital has a program where it matches, dollar
    for dollar, donations given to certain charities, and animal shelters
    do fit the requirements. That way the shelters benefit from double
    the amount you give them. Let's help all we can!!

    	I tried replying to 2110 but it was set no-write

    	Does anyone know if the shelter (s) in the Nashua
    	area are no-kill? I've been tossing around the idea
    	of volunteering maybe one night a week or something
    	but I KNOW I couldn't handle seeing those adorable
    	creatures put to sleep.

    	Any help would be great...

| 339.9 | I was there ...... | TPVAX1::ROBBINS |  | Wed May 17 1989 08:24 | 34 |

        Hi,

           The shelter in Nashua known as the Humane Society of Southern
    Hillsborough County (I hate how long that name is :^).....) is not
    a no-kill shelter. However me and my husband have been volunteering
    there since oh about 6 months now. Two nights a week is our norm.
    Even though I know that they do put animals down (only when necessary)
    you can trust me when I say I only know that because its known.
    Meaning I have never seen or heard about it happening. It doesn't
    happen that often only under extreme circumstances and is a sensitive
    issue for the staff as well as for us. If you volunteered you would
    not be aware if it would happen unless you specifically asked for
    some reason. I understand where you're coming from as I was there
    myself. If you'd like to talk about it feel free to contact me at
    the above node. They really could use some more volunteers (I think
    they only have 3 of us) which isn't very much at all. Realize when
    you volunteer your time you can essentially pick what you'd like
    to do. If you'd like to give the dogs some exercise etc... or helping
    with addressing the fliers going out, or doing the adoption list
    for this conference, helping out at different fundraisers, working
    on the bingo they're trying to put together, and on and on.

        Like I said I've been pleasently surprised by how good I feel
    about volunteering there. I remember walking in there with my heart
    beating a mile a minute telling myself the minute I didn't feel
    "right" about things that I would just leave. I never had to.
    Feel free to contact me or for that matter anyone in this conference
    who has been toying with the idea.

                                                                kim
