230.0. "Amazing Cat stories..." by DSSDEV::COLLINS () Wed Apr 09 1986 08:29
Well I noticed (maybe incorrectly) that there don't seem to be many
"cat stories" in these notes. Being the owner of 3 frisky felines I feel it is
my duty to relate the happenings of my household.
Now I'm no stranger to cats, I grew up with varying numbers - no less
than 2 and no more than 4. All outdoor cats (we only lost 1 to a car in about
20 years). My present cats are of the outdoor variety. Well on with the story.
As we all know cats are predators by nature. I've been having this
problem with field mice in my garage so I set a "hav-a-hart" trap to capture
the culprits. Every night for about 8 days I succeeded in catching a mouse,
which I deposited in a 10 gal fish tank for later disposal. By "disposal" I
don't mean I was going to destroy them, I relocated them instead (very far
away...). Anyway the cats provided a most fascinated audience whenever I was
adding a mouse to the aquarium. In fact they would stare at the tank for
hours, pawing at the sides. I can only venture to guess how the mice felt
about this.
One day, when the tank was full of mice, I decided to transfer them to
a cardboard box for relocation. All three cats were present and accounted for.
This made me feel at ease since I figured that any "escaping" mice would not
get far. While picking up one of the mice by the tail, one of our cats, "Minki"
by name, swatted the dangling mouse from my hand. Instantly all three cats were
prowling the floor for the escapee, but he got away. During the confusion
another mouse made a break for it, instantly the larger cat "Pooki" was upon
him. Did you know a small field mouse will fight a cat ?? They get nasty when
cornered. Since all our cats were young this befuddled them. But through their
efforts we managed to recapture the mouse and safely relocate him.
Any one else have cat stories??

ps.	The names of our cats are of lithuanian origin:
Minki - Mink (he's black with long hair)
Pookie - Fluff (he's got fluffy hair)
Uggie - Fire (the U is pronounced like the 'oo' in book)
