look at the clock, go back to sleep. Fall out of bed, decontaminate
contact lenses, boil kettle, go to bog, get partly dressed, make coffee,
feed fish, turn telly on, read whatever arrives in post before throwing
it in the bin, drink coffee, get washed/shaved/etc, get changed. Then
if I'm not going to work, I'll slob around for a bit listening to CDs
and reading old magazines, maybe watching the motor racing on telly,
contemplate cleaning the house before deciding not to bother, think of
eating something and finding at all the dishes are in the washing up
bowl so I'll have to wash them, etc etc.

| | Lately, I've been moving my speakers around to get the soundstage just
right. I think I need to cut about 2" off the speaker stands, but I'll
save that as my last desperate act of perfectionism tweaking.

The new Rotel mono-block amps are breaking in nicely, they are. The
auto-on is quite a nice feature. My project next week (or whenever I
feel I can spend the buckage) is to build amp stands that match the
speaker stands (piano black laquer finish) for the mono-blocks, to place
    behind each speaker stand.

After the stands are done, I'll cut the speaker wire down to size, then
sodder plugs to the speaker wire ends for quick and firm connections to
the amps and speakers. The expensive part is buying the longer
interconnects that go from the pre-amp to the amps- they will have to be
    about 8' long each.

After that, I will be doing a lot of critical listening. I will be
writing up a review of several components for a friend's home page.

When done, I will move the speakers around some more, then find something
else that needs tweaking/adjusting... [insert infinite loop].

| | Yes, longer speaker wire runs lower the dampening factor of your
amplifier. I forget the formula, at the moment, but it is significant.

I'll be able to cut the length of the run of each speaker wire by about
8', which is significant. Then there is the aestetics, I can hide
(well, partially 8^) ) my amplifiers behind the speakers (they have an
auto turn-on feature, so I don't have to worry about physically turning
them on, so I can place them just about wherever I like), which leaves
me more room for my home entertainment "stand" for components (I am
pretty much out of space now 8^) ).

The difference (and convenience) is worth a few bucks for a longer
interconnect (I don't go gonzo here, an 8' run of the kind I will be
    buying will run about $70-110).

I realize that I can do better by buying REAL expensive speaker cable,
but I don't think that in my case it will make much difference. Once I
replace my preamp (going to a more transparent preamp, which will also
have XLR outs), well, then I'll consider it (especially since I'll
only need a few feet of it).

For now, the wire I have is just fine (and a bargain at $2/foot...even
    if it is used).

    Steve,

    I recently purchased a Focusrite "Red 4" (I think its 4...) It's
a preamp, and it has no dubbing or tone control capability, so
that could be a limitation in a regular home setup (I use it
in my studio.) On the other hand, this box is unreal in the
sound department. I'm using it to drive Bryston 4B amps with
Tannoy monitors. It has fully balanced ins and outs.

The price is... pricey. Way beyond what any normal person would
consider. However, in defense of my spending habits, I will point
out that this is for a commercial recording studio... my home
stuff is a lowly Tandberg (pretty nice actually, but not in
    the Focusrite class.)

| | My speaker/interconnect cables do not seem suceptable to EM radiation
nor other types of noise. When listening to a CD, the silent passages
are silent. There is no audible noise even if you put your ear close
    to the speaker.

This is pretty good performance in this aspect, since my wires run all
too close (and over, in some areas) to power cables, surge suppressors,
the TV, electrical outlets, etc. Not an ideal way to run wires; no, it
    isn't. 8^)
