    didn't do any of the things I said, got up early and headed to
    the beach.  it was a gorgous day for it, a bit brisk,  but hey,
    spring is on the way :-)  Next sunday, I'll be visiting Jim in
    the nuthouse :-)))))))Z

    took my road bike out for the first ride (Sunday). felt like i was
    on a rocket after running around on the mountain bike! took a fairly
    easy 23 miler and still averaged 19.8 mph. 40 degrees was little cool.
    
    the Merlin (bicycle) gets a tune-up this Friday! i LOVE spring!

    Sunday went to visit my brother for the first time in several weeks.

    My fun weekend began Sat. with me missing most of the first set of
    games as I had to change a CV joint on the Jetta (with the help of a
    friend and his dad's barn, which has a nice hoist).
    
    Then I watched NCAA hoops. 
    
    Sunday...watched NCAA hoops.
    
    And if I forgot to mention it, Friday night I watched NCAA hoops.  8^)

    A hoist? For a CV joint?  Sounds like you did it the hard way unless it's
    one o'them lift from below types.  Ahhhhh, the memories....

    Actually, it is a winch mounted on the ceiling (a big one) that we use
    to lift the front end off the ground.  Beats the heck out of a bumper
    or floor jack.  Good thing we checked both sides, I had 4 of 6 bolts on
    the  other CV joint loose...some ready to fall off (luckily the boot
    does a good job of keeping loose bolts from falling off right away).
    
    Old cars are wonderful.  8^)
    
    Since my right emergency brake cable busted Friday, we put a new one o'
    those on, too.  Next weekend, it looks like we've got a caliper or
    cylindar to replace...brakes are acting funky.

    skis yes I am.  
    
    Gonna go out in the woods and terrorize the flora and fauna with my new
    bicicletta after which I will recommence to razing my bathroom, take down 
    a few trees in the yard and hopefully reassemble my motorcycle.  Into 
    Boston in the evening to meet up with strangers. 
    
    Sunday, a breakfast out, more trail riding/chipmunk terrorizing followed 
    by more wall bashing.  Bankwet in the afternoon for the kiddies and their 
    coaches.

    Tonight:	I'm supposed to be going to a surprise birthday party for a
    member of my Littleton theatre group, having received a phone call from
    her husband asking me to hold the night open and to await a map in the
    mail, but I haven't gotten it yet, so may have trouble finding their
    new house 8^).
    
    Saturday:	Going to my friend Cooie's house in the morning; she was 
    recently named Registrar at Boston University and wants me to help her
    do a complete makeover.  That should be fun.  Then Sally's memorial 
    service in Sudbury at 4 and a reception afterwards.  That probably
    won't be fun 8^/.
    
    Sunday:	I absolutely have to do my taxes 8^p.  Then rehearsal Sunday
    night from 7-10.

    it's a strange phenomenon i've noticed. i mean they all used to be fun,
    else they wouldn't've been friends! now i think we just keep in touch
    out of politeness. i now much prefer the company of my twenty-something
    friends.

	30 something friends can be cool, but they are definitely much more
reserved. They can be fun to have a relaxing time with, but I find that the 20
something crowd is much more fun when you want to get out and get down and
dance!

    being old folks... until we partied his sorry ass into the
    ground.

    He made the mistake of bragging about his high tolerance for
    hard liquor as well. Oooops. A little Jack Daniels contest
    ensued...

    I made a point of getting up early the next morning and
    banging on his window too.

    (Of course, the 2nd night I totally collapsed and slept for
     about 10 hours, but he doesn't know that! :-)

    That's funny, back in 1979 I left a major battery-making company
    (Duracell, aka Mallory at the time) to find a new life at a
    major computer-making company.

    The only 30 something people I know act more like they`re 17. Sort of
    go through a mature and sensible stage in their mid to late 20`s,then
    get bored of that,then revert to be the equivalent of a rebellious
    teenager.

    I took last friday off- my driver's license was to expire Saturday and
    rather than do the mail renewal I decided to do it in person and get a
    new one issued; the old one got pretty ratty and its about three
    addresses out of date anyway.  And while I was there I filed the
    paperwork to get a new title issued for my car, as the loan is paid 
    off.  I got there at 7:45, I was 20th in line; when the doors opened at
    8am, there were more than 60 people in line.  But I got out of there
    before 9.
    
    Then I did some scheduling; hooked up with a buddy and arranged a bike
    ride.  Rode down to his place, and thence out to ... Metcalf Road. 
    Lots of pain later, but triumphant, we parted company, and I went home 
    for a shower and some ibuprofen.  What a friday!

    Sunday - Choice of racing off of Marblehead or a leisurely breakfast
    after sleeping in, reading the paper.  Possible dinner with friends, a
    ride in the country on the scooter and a short hike up Monadnock, or

    So far I've mowed the lawn and weeded the vegetable garden and called

    bathroom tonight and perhaps cook dinner on the grill.  For Sunday I've 
    lined up both a lunch date and a dinner date.

    Recital tonight.  The Opera Workshop is on duty all through the Friday
    and Sunday recitals, to break up the monotony of small children
    plinking on the piano.  Saturday is the violin recital; we will not be
    subjected to it.
    
    Unfortunately, my largely useless trip to Houston made it impossible
    for me to rehearse my solo recital piece with the accompanist, so I
    will have to do "A Serpina penserete" (from Pergolesi's "La Serva
    Padrona") next time.  Also, we didn't get to rehearse the card-reading
    scene from "Carmen," so that's out, too.  Hmph.

    "Belle Nuit," and a trio from "The Magic Flute."  (Since I wasn't
    involved, I didn't pay attention to the title.)  The Lakhme got
    scratched because one of the people was sick half the summer.

    I got up before 6:00am yesterday (Saturday) to go whitewater rafting on
    the Deerfield River (Western Mass).  Twas a good day, mostly class IV. 
    3 people from our group fell overboard.  I was saved from the same fate
    at the last minute by Raq grabbing my vest just as I was going over
    headfirst.  Thanks, Raqhoney 8^).
    
    I did break a nail though 8^(.
    
    Today this fatherless daughter is taking a daughterless father out to

    Heading for Sugarloaf USA this afternoon after a brief foray to AKO. 
    Stopping in Freeport ME to visit the Patagonia outlet which for me is a
    twice annual pilgrimage.  Will also make the obligatory stop at L.L.
    Bean outlet, just because.  
    
    Tomorrow, mountain biking in the AM at, on, near Sugarloaf.  A round o'
    golf in the afternoon with cart, compliments of Mt. Wachusett NASTAR 
    program followed by pool/hot tub, dinner and drinks.
    
    Sunday, another round o' golf and a leisurely drive home in the
    afternoon.  The best part of it is that the condo and golf are free! 

	Tonight :  Softball game, then a mid-season softball party

	Tomorrow:  A doubleheader in softball, where if we win both, we improve
		   our chances of winning the division greatly!

	Sunday  :  Only 1 game of softball today. This is a team we MUST beat,
		   as they are in 1st. We did beat them once already.

    Monday, last minute food/beverage shopping and preparation.  Peeling 5-8 
    pounds of shrimp, some for cocktails, some for the grill!  Maybe a quick 
    spin in the woods, just because.   
    
    Tuesday, a scooter ride to Mt. Monadnock or Cardigan for a hike or a
    trip to Pawtuckaway for a MTB ride.

 NH. Flies from a grass strip up there, lands at TEWMAC airport, takes his

    I don't remember asking for your opinion, however, I will note
    that I have been going to Locke-Ober (is that better?) for
    more than 30 years and have always found it to be quite
    extraordinary. There are some truly wonderful dishes and wines
    available at Locke-Ober; of course, recognizing this takes
    a more refined palate. Unfortunately for you, char-broiled
    ground sirloin and American beers are not a specialty.

    the delight of lobster savannah is not in the cream sauce,
    but in the combination of green peppers (and to some
    degree, pimento) and lobster. that is an absolutely
    brilliant combination. of course, if you don't like or
    eat lobster in the first place, it would hardly appeal.
    on the other hand, i've somewhat tired of the lobster/
    drawn butter combination.

    while i certainly appreciate the simplicity of japanese
    cuisine, i don't think lobster is something which calls
    for understatement. i don't eat lobster every day; in
    fact i eat sushi far more than i eat lobster. but when
    i do eat lobster, on occasion i like to "go for broke",

    Well, the 495 traffic sucked big time.  It took me close to 2 hours to
    get from Maynard to Norfolk, and it poured the whole time.  However, once 
    we got to the game it was clear and relatively dry.
    
    It then took me 40 minutes to get home, which is a half hour further
    away than Maynard 8^p.
    
    Anyhoo, I must say that either football, beer, or male bonding brings
    out the worst in people.  Well, ok, MEN.  A large portion of the men
    around me were a bunch of loud, obnoxious, impolite pigs, showing off
    to each other and total strangers, shouting obscenities at the few
    women in the area, swearing, spitting, etc., etc., etc.

    non existent and the weather conditions are adverse.  Don't be a poser

     I think the game was quite successful for what it was. They weren't
    trying to win a game, they were trying to see what they had. Their
    first team played quite well. The Lions played their first team for
    most of the game. 
    
     As for Parcells, he doesn't _want_ to be happy. He won't be happy

	I have them facing down towards the road, so that I can see a little
better. In this lovely state of ours, where the paint they use on the roads is
so cheap, it wears off to the faint stage in a very short period of time. And
in the rain it could be brand new, and you are going to have a hard time seeing
lines. These will allow me to view the road much easier, and with them facing
down and not level or up, it should not interfere with the oncoming traffic.
Btw.... the pretty yellow covers have been removed.

    My weekend went as planned except for the fact that Othello showed a
    shocking lack of responsibility and declined to show up in time for his
    vet appointment.  He's always home in the morning for breakfast;
    Saturday he strolled in at 1:30, about a half hour *after* I got back
    from the vet, and of course he can't be seen til Tuesday evening.  He's
    not happy with me right now because I won't let him go back out.
    
    Mina got her shots; Fargie had his bandage removed.  The stitches come out 
    Thursday afternoon.  I certainly hope he's more cooperative about those
    than he was about the bandage!

    So far I have seen:
    
    (1)  The Run of the Country - (***.5 out of *****) Film was introduced
    by Peter Yates (the director) who talked about it being about "love of
    a father for his son, love between a boy and girl and love of one's
    country" The two younger stars  (Matt Keeslar and Victoria Smurfit) and
    the screenwriter (Shane Connaughton) also came out on stage.  The film
    is set in current time in County Cavan, Ireland. The father (very well
    acted by Albert Finney) and son have just experienced the death of
    their wife/mother and are having a difficult time adjusting. 18 year
    old Danny wants "the run of the country" which is a local expression
    for freedom.  He leaves his father's home and shares adventures with
    Prunty, who seems to be a farmer, but who we suspect is something more.
    Danny also meets and falls in love with Annagh Lee, a young girl living
    north of the border. The Irish countryside is beautifully filmed and
    the acting is terrific (especially by Keeslar).  My only complaint is
    that the pace was a little too slow at the beginning of the movie.
    
    (2) To Die For - (****) Unfortunately I didn't see the Gala showing 
    (which is when all the stars appear) but the repeat showing on Saturday. 
    This movie could best be described as "quirky" and whether you like it
    or not will depend on whether you like these kind of fanciful/farcical 
    films. It stars Nicole Kidman who is a real revelation - I would never
    have imagined her cast for this part, but now that I have seen the
    movie, I cannot imagine any other actress in the role. The story is
    very loosely based on the Pamela Smart (I think that's the name) case
    where the schoolteacher had her students kill her husband. Except here,
    the story has been written by Buck Henry and that alone should give you
    a hint that sarcasm and caustic wit will play a big part in the
    telling.  The husband is played by Matt Dillon, but it really is a very
    minor role. One of the students is played by Joaquin Phoenix, River's
    brother, and it's almost scary how stoned he looks most of the time.
    Dillon's sister is played by Illeana Douglas... can't remember where
    I've seen her before, but she steals all her scenes and gets most of
    the best lines.  Suzanne Stone (Kidman) has a dream - she wants her own
    TV talk show and won't let anyone (including her husband) stop her. She
    lands a job at the local (town is called Little Hope) cable station and
    then pesters her bosses until they let her shoot a documentary about
    high school students.  With the help of the 3 teens she has decided to
    use for the documentary, she contrives to get rid of her husband
    
    
    (3)  Steal Big, Steal Little (***) - Went to the Gala last night - we
    were introduced to Andrew Davis, the director and most of the principal
    cast - Andy Garcia (who looks even better in person than he does on
    film), his daughter , Rachel Ticotin, Joe Patoliano and Alan Arkin (who
    got the biggest claps). Andy said that one of the best things about
    Toronto is that he could legally buy Cuban cigars.  This movie is
    Mexican twin brothers (both played by Garcia) who were discovered on
    the property of a wealthy financier and his wife, a flamboyant dancer
    and were adopted and raised by them until the couple divorces. One
    brother goes with the man and years later is a ruthless developer and
    major slimeball. The other brother stayed with the woman and is a
    rancher with a social conscience and deep roots in the Latino
    community.  When Ruben (the rancher) inherits the ranch (which is
    10,000 acres of prime Santa Barbara real estate) and a fortune in cash,
    Robby goes into attack mode and the fun begins. This film is a lot of
    fun, and will probably be described in the print ads as something like
    "a rollicking good time".  Alan Arkin is great as a loud, pushy Chicago
    salesman in debt to the mob, who follows the scent of cash to Rancho
    Mirage - and stays to becomes Ruben's new best friend.  However, the
    fun and charm of the movie started to wear off - the ending was weak
    (IMHO)
    
    (4) Anne Frank Remembered (*****) - bring lots of tissues. I saw this
    one this afternoon and it was strange to return outside to a beautiful
    sunny day after viewing it. The is a documentary which has been
    meticulously researched and assembled by Jon Blair. He reconstructs her
    life from early childhood to her death in the Bergen Belsen
    concentration camp just weeks before the Third Reich fell. The movie
    combined personal interviews, photos, family letters and film clips.
    This documentary is the first to have been made in co-operation with
    The Anne Frank House in Amsterday and much of what appears in it (such
    as footage of Anne herself) has never been seen before. Narration is by
    Kenneth Brannaugh and excerpts from the diary are read by Glenn Close.
    It was heartrendering to follow the journey of Anne's father after the
    war. After his release, Otto Frank searched for his wife and children,
    only to learn that none had survived.  He spent the rest of his life
    fighting anti_Semitism and furthering his daughter's message of
    tolerance and hope.  A stunning and tragic film.
    
    Tonight I am off to the Gala of "The Crossing Guard"... review to
    follow!

    I am going to recreate with impunity this weekend.  
    
    Canoeing on the Saco tomorrow and Sunday rain permitting.  
    Camping on a sand bar somewhere down the lazy river tomorrow evening.  
    Packing tonight.
    
    Oh yes, in case anyone is wondering, I am not afraid or ashamed to admit

    The last time I did it was three years ago.  There was not much water but
    there was enough to make it passable.  We did ground several times and
    had to get out and hoof it over a few gravel bars.  According to the
    Obersturmcanoerenter, there is enough but it certainly isn't roaring. 
    We are doing the 20 miler from Fryeburg to the bridge.  Same as your
    trip Don?  If it doesn't work out, there is always hiking somewhere up
    there.  Maybe we'll pack the mountian bikes as well.

    certain someone, I was deluged with requests to get them on the web...
    
    I still have one private request to satisfy (don't ask who)... so I
    guess this would be a good time to dig them out... for old times sake

     And.... the negatives are filed in a very safe place for those (ahem)

    Tonight:  Pick up a pick up truck for hauling sheet goods tomorrow. 
    Most likely dinner out.

    Day: Visit the Obersturmlumberfuhrer and pick up sheet goods, light 
    fixture, fan, electrical outlet and toilet.  Lay new sub-floor in 
    bathroom, reconnect baseboard, refill boiler, turn furnace on, cross 
    fingers, rub rabbit's foot, pray.   
    
    Evening: House warming/anniversary party.  
    
    Sunday:  Install new shutoff valves for tub, install GFI outlet in
    bathroom, go for a woodsride or play a round or golf immediately 
    followed by beer drinking and bar-b-cueing.
