    England - absolutely love it !

    Cannes - Southern France. The Riveria. Very free spirited place.
             Enjoyed walking the croissette with some UK-based
             Digits. Enjoyed watching the hookers (that's a
             story in itself.) Enjoyed staying up all night and
             walking the beach. Enjoyed vodka sorbet and Neopolitan
             pizza. Enjoyed the beach during the day too for
             other, um, reasons.

    approached at night by an enormous full moon on an ancient ferry not
    much bigger than the African Queen.
    
    St. John, VI, but not Caneel Bay, Drdan -- rather the beach up the road
    a  piece as you head toward Maho Bay, as seen from the cliff
    overlooking it -- forgot the name.
    
    Yosemite Valley? (if you're not looking at the crowds) -- this probably
    isn't a permanent part of this august group -- it's just that I'd never
    seen the west before last summer, and this was the most stunning part
    of a series of stunning landscapes in Cal, Az and Nev
    
    For heart-aching quaintness:
    
    Heidleberg, and a series of astonishingly intact "Pied Piper" type
    hamlets in Germany
    
    The seaside village on the Greek island of Logos in the Adriatic
    
    The hillside Venetian-empire town on the Adriatic island of Hvar
    (Croatian now?)
    
    For the tingle and adrenaline rush of diving big-time into a new
    culture: any great city -- NY, Paris, London, Tokyo, and a bunch others

    Could be Trunk Bay which is purported to be one of the most beautiful
    beaches in the world and featured in Four Seasons, the movie.  Leinster 
    Bay (too far up the coast I think).  Was it the one near the ruins of 
    the Annenberg (sp?) Sugar Mill with Johnson reef off in the distance?  
    This one may be Maho Bay.  St. John is definitely a great place in and 
    of itself.  I'll be there in May so I'll let you know if it is still 
    as breathtaking :-).

    Berlin is a cool place (the one in the Federal Republic of Germany,
    that is.) A very happening post-punk scene. Better than London in
    that regard. Night clubs galore. A brilliant mix of the old and
    new. A dark underbelly. Cabarets. Very very hip.

    The place we turn off on Big Pine is the crossroad just before the
    light and the area where the Saturday flea market is.
    
    Since the last time down to the Keys is now 3 years (since my last pay
    increase), I can't remember the name of the street.  There was, at that
    time, a new development of single family homes being built with Gulf
    access that looked awesome.

    My dad has a very large place one block off the Atlantic in Marathon
    and they always love to have company.  With a Super Saver to Miami, a
    ticket can sometimes be picked up for $99/rt.  It's around a 90 minute
    drive to his place.

    Add Estes Park/Rocky Mountain National Park to the list of
    places I put in earlier. Some of the most memorable hiking
    I've ever done...
    
    Also, for local flavor... I really like the area around
    Wachusett Reservoir, particularly the rivers that run
    through Sterling and Princeton Mass, and the various
    trails that lead to the summit of Wachusett Mountain.
    Also, the Greenfield/Hawley/Deerfield/Conway area
    of western Mass.

    Actually, I've been there numerous times and have also been to St. John's 
    USVI.  St. John's is like Revere Beach compared to St. Barth's.

One of the best ways to describe St. Barths is to describe how you pack
for it.

First you pack two suitcases.  Then you remove all the clothes in one
suitcase and replace them with money.  Now you're ready to go.

Average price of lunch for two is $60.

Average price of dinner for two is $120.

Be sure you rent a villa with kitchenette, because unless you make a lot
more than a principal engineer with 20 years at DEC, you'll be eating at
home half your dinners and two thirds of your lunches (and all of your
breakfasts).

But it's a nice place.  Absolutely nothing to do but sit on the beach.
No night clubs, no discos, nothing but beaches and French restaurants.

		    Being there and remembering times there are 
		    wonderful!   One of my favorite:  My 2 year old son	
		    and I napping in the hammock.  The only sounds
		    around are the sounds of my older son playing in 
		    the sand with his father, the water, and the 
		    birds.

    Raq,  There is a place halfway between Bangor and Bar Harbour
    in Maine, called Lucerne in Maine, Maine. (Yes, that's the name of the
    town.)  It is supposed to be an exact miniature replica of 
    Lucerne, Switzerland.  It is absolutely breath-taking up there
    in the winter time.  There is a place called the Lucerne Inn
    that I stay at every time I go there.  They have a pool, fireplaces,
    whirlpool tubs, a view that will knock your socks off from every room,
    and a fabulous five star restaurant.
    
    If you ever get the chance, go there!!  It's a long drive, but SO worth
    it!!!!!

    My Mum and Dad went to New England in the Autumn,er,I mean Fall `cos
    apparently the leaves turn a nice colour. Very impressive,apparently.

    Mr. Cooks, this was not a 'kinky hotel' as you put it.
    It was extremely elegant, very victorian, and just a
    really lovely place to go.  The fireplace in each room
    provided a warm romantic setting for one of the most
    fabulous views I've ever seen from a hotel window.
    
    This place was extremely classy, but with a laid back touch.
    
    Nothing 'trashy' about it.

    All of the kinky hotels are in the Poconos, a semimountainous section of
    Pennsatucky where heart shaped bathtubs, round beds and red satinand
    velvet abound.  The second area is Niagara Falls but that has fallen to
    cheap fleabag dives, tacky gift shops and purveyors of porn.  At least
    so I was told.

   St. Simon's Island, GA if a very nice place to spend a week.  Nice
   beaches with a density of only 5-6 people per 150 sq. meters. 
   Marvelous golf close by.  Steeped in history (English stopped the
   northernmost advance of the Spaniards at the Battle of Bloody Marsh). 
   Good shopping.  Very slow pace.  Nice fishing.  Etc.
   
   We spend 10 days there every June.  Rent a condo on the beach.  Very
   nice.  Prices are reasonable.

	There are so many place that bring back fond memories that to
	narrow it down would be much too difficult.  I pretty well like
	anywhere that is different, but some of my favs are:

City to live in:  Sydney, Australia - this is a city that offers everything 
	you could want - friendly people, culture, beautiful weather, 	
	fantastic beaches, nearby-Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley.  If 
	anyone had a way to approve my application for immigration, I would 
	be more than grateful!  I really love Toronto, but Sydney is the 
	only other city I have been to that I would rather live in.

City to play tourist in:  Florence, Italy - amazing to see so much history-
        the artwork and architecture kept me fascinated for hours.  Loved
	the market (especially the leather stuff - oohh errr) and you can
	never go wrong with Italian restaurants, especially in Italy!

Island:	Tie between Hydra, Greece and Tahiti.  Hydra was a place of 
	beauty - glorious sun reflecting off the Mediterranean Sea and
	white washed houses.  No cars are allowed on this island - a lot
	of people ride their donkeys in to town (which consists of a couple
	of streets along the waterfront)  Also, there is an artists colony
	on the other side of the island which is worth a visit.  Tahiti 
	is as lush and tropical as you would imagine, but also has a major
	metropolitan centre in Papette that has a great marketplace, and the
	governors palace is quite the sight.  We went to a double waterfall
	and swam au naturel in the rain forest - good time had by all!

The great outdoors: There are way too many hiking trails and scenic spots
	to list, but a couple of my favs are Yosemite Park (especially
	watching the sunset and reflect off Half Dome) and pretty well
	the whole state of Colorado - you people who live there are
	most fortunate


	Now I'm depressed.... instead of packing to go travelling, I'm
	stuck here packing up my cube for yet another move across the
	office.  I swear they just keep us moving so that facilities can
	keep their jobs!  This is my 5th move in just over 3 years!

    Ah Sanibel, give me the beach....fast!!

    Rent a bike right away when you get there (it's good to even call ahead
    and make reservations) otherwise you may not get one. And ride through
    the Ding Darling preserve. It's a real nice ride, but don't get too
    close to the 'gators. :-)

       A bike's nice, canoe is better.

Canoe gets you closer to the alligators.  They might even come on board if
they're hungry.

    about 9 years ago, i went and visited a friend's relatives with her in
    fort myers.  i remember we took a drive out to sanibel island for the
    day to go to the beach...but that is all i remember about that part.  i
    also remember renting a canoe and taking it for a paddle down some

    different kinds of lettuce.  They have a great ethnic foods section,

    you think victory is cheaper???  eeessshhhh...not the victory in
    fitchburg...shaws is cheaper....and i like shaws most of all (of area
    grocery stores) but victory does do double coupons, so if i have a
    bunch of coups, i'll go to victory...purity is too expensive too, and
    shop and save can be for some things, but not all, and doesn't have
    some of the stuff i like to buy...
    
    i miss super stop and shop...closest one to me (that i know of) is in

    The Victory in Ayer is much cheaper than the Shaw's in Leominster.  I
    also tried the Shop & Save by the WalMart in, er, Leominster?
    Lancaster? Lunenburg?  Don't remember.  And I've been to the Purity in
    Fitchburg.  Anyway, the Victory is the cheapest of all of them.
    
    Shirley is too small to have a supermarket 8^(.

 I'm fortunate in that I have 2 Shaw's in the area from which to chose.  One
 in Derry, and one in Londonderry.  We also have a Marketbasket in Londonderry,
 but I don't shop there.  So, when it's time to go ashoppin', I get to make
 a choice when I leave my parking lot..left to Derry or right to Londonderry..
 Man, life is exciting, ain't it?


 What's the big deal with the Purity in Acton?

    They refurbished it recently.  It's large, bright, and stays open until
    midnight.  I think they'll also take your groceries out to your car for

    That's true, it was formerly open 24 hours.  But at least it's still
    open later than the Victory in Ayer, which closes at 8:00 most nights
    8^p.

    Well, we've just had a shiny, new Shaw's open in Northbridge
    giving Victory some competition for the first time in years.
    
    After going a couple of times, I think Shaw's is more expensive,
    they don't double the coupons like Victory and now that Victory
    has expanded their hours (to compete a little better),  I'll stick
    to Victory.

    One of my favorite places is one of the many ledges, high up in the
    Colorado Rockies (Springs), that over looks miles and miles of plains,
    it's just like you see in the old westerns. Fantastic sight.

    Marina Cay, BVI, tucked in behind the reef in about 12 feet of water
    with the prevailing easterlies flowing through the front hatch, the
    chop broken up by the reef, and a moon the size of Montana rising over
    the horizon.  Add a generous portion of Mount Gay with slightly greater
    amounts of mixer du jour, a large wedge of lime and forget for the next
    two weeks.  

Is this some out-of-the-way place where the reality actually matches the 
idylic fantasy? Do such places still exist there?

Or is it another one of those places where you have to get to the sheltered 
water by 2:00 to get a mooring spot, shoehorn yourself between several 
neighbors and hope the wind doesn't change, and hope you can get on the
upcurrent side - else you get 100 boats worth of sewage flowing past your
gunnels.

I'm genuinely curious here - my impression of BVI was that it was probably
wonderful 40 years ago, but now it's the Lake Lanier weekend of the Caribbean
(those in the ATL area know what that means).

    Yes it is and yes it does but you better hurry because as you suspect,
    it is changing.  Marina Cay has limited anchoring and 1-2 doz.
    moorings.  It has been forever changed by the presence of yet another
    Pusser's Landing complete with Pusser's store and mini-ferry from Beef
    Island.  It is still a beautiful anchorage and you can get there later
    in the afternoon unlike Cooper Island where folks get there at 9:00 AM
    and camp there all day.  There are still idyllic anchorages available
    however.  Away from the crowds and as of yet unspoiled by overcrowding. 
    Best bets are to go in the lower seasons of late Spring and mid-Fall.

    It is awfully crowded in the high season and I would recommend avoiding
    it at all costs.  Low seasons can be decent thought he weather is less
    predictable.  So it rains twice for 15 minutes per day, no big deal
    IMO.  You can still find decent anchorages that are realtively
    uncrowded with good shelter.  There are no currents to speak of and
    shoehorning is a way of life in some anchorages regardless of the
    season.  If you are interested in more info. drop me a line and I will
