Your punishment is to listen to the hoots of spotted owls and the
chanting of the Friends of the Earth while watching Logger head Turtles
choke on plastic bags and dolphins caught in fishing nets. The only
    good dunnage is no dunnage.

    	Huh?

A friend and his wife recently received a gift for Christmas. It
was a box filled with pop corn. They received it from a friend
who always gave unusual gifts, so they just chalked it up to that,
and ate the pop corn as they watched TV that night. They commented
to each other that the popcorn sure tasted stale as they were
eating it. Then as they got a bit down into the box, they came
across a lead crystal bowl buried in the pop corn. The pulled
it out, and as they did, a note was stuck to the bowl. It read
"Do not eat this pop corn. It is for packing purposes only."

piffle. most of the companies i buy mail-order from pack their stuff
in cornstarch popcorn, not plastic. throw it in the water closet and
it dissolves. or do as i do, and keep it (in a sealed trash bag) for
shipping other stuff to someone else.

| | There is a place out here that will recycle foam packing
popcorn as well as any other styrofoam. And you can take foam
packing popcorns to almost any pack-n-ship outfit. They'll
take them off your hands, if not give you credit towards future
    	service.

| | Joe, I was being tongue in cheek somewhat but, there are better
alternatives than loose fill dunnage for all applications like using
none. The corn starch material is more expensive and leaves a residue
that will not completely biodegrade. The foam peanuts eventually end
up in a landfill at some time. The environmentally and economically
correct solution is to not use the materials if at all possible. The
industrial popcorn is also more expensive than it's foam cousin. My
hat is off to you folks that recycle the stuff and handle what you
receive in a responsible manner. Using the stuff in the first place
does not a good boxer (packaging practices) make.

| | Then there was the party I attended where the host asked us all
to save the shells from the peanuts he was serving. He showed
us several garbage bags full of such shells he had already
collected. He used these for his packing needs.

Having worked for a company that dealt with warehouse
fire safety before joining DEC I can tell you that there are
serious fire hazards associated with peanut shells and popcorn.
Not to mention the problem of rats eating the stuff........

| | Each year when I close my swimming pool I fill the skimmer with styrofoam
noodles. The idea is, when water gets in there over the winter and freezes,
it will squash the noodles instead of breaking the PVC housing.
This fall, I took out a box which had been shipped to me, still full of
noodles, and started filling the skimmer. Luckily there was still a little
water in the bottom of the skimmer when I started and could see the
corn starch thingees beginning to dissolve.
I quickly learned how to distinguish between the faux plastic ones and
the real ones. Coulda did some ex$pen$ive damage, otherwise.
