Let's be a bit fair here, Ed. I neither said NOR hinted at
anything even remotely similar to that. The rules were writ-
ten long ago, and have been in place for about 8 years now,
without any complaints regarding their content. So if all of
the participants before you could follow them [or at least
acknowledge their existence], there's no reason that you should
    	be any different.

You have to admit that coming in here at 9:30AM, after leav-
ing here at 6:30PM, to almost 100 replies, 90% of which are
completely content-free, is a bit much, yes? I would LOVE to
come in here at 9:30AM and see 100 replies DISCUSSING* new
bands, and new releases by old bands, and concert appearances
by old and new bands, etc., etc. What I DON'T want to see is
3-4 people going back and forth with "They suck", "Yup", "Al-
ways did", "Always will" for 20 replies at a time. This ac-
complishes absolutely nothing except for a waste of CPU cycles
    	and bandwidth.

    	* DISCUSSING should include some sort of content, maybe list-
ing plusses and minuses of a band/song/album.

| 16.17 | Chill! | KDX200::COOPER | Heh heh - Not likely pal | Thu May 30 1996 16:55 | 50 |
| | Just to remind everyone, KDX200 lives in *my* office at CXO3 (yeah,
right up the hill from CXO1). This means I share *my* workstations
resources with my fellow music lovers.

...and part (a very small part) of my responsibility is for the content
of files stored on said vaxstation and it's compliance with corporate
    policy.

I'll give you folks a little history:

Shawn didn't mean to generalize about CXO. However, towards the end of
nearly every fiscal year, the manufacturing management teams at CXO1+2
put on a big push to meet the numbers. If you've been around DEC for
a while, it's all quite normal.

However, it seems, there are always a few folks from the manufacturing
and assembly lines in CXO who come in to this conference and stir up the
sh*t. Last year they all lived on COMET until Quantum came along and
    bought the DDM business.

As a matter of fact, a couple contractors from CXO met their fate one
day last year, when they went a little too far in this very conference.
They got escorted to the door...Not so much for what they said here, but
for the investigation that proceeded after they mouthed off and drew
attention to the probably content of their directores... Needless to
say, it wasn't work related - sex drugs and rock-n-roll: EXCELLENT
    reading!

Now, I don't LIKE to play hard ball (wagagaga) with anyone, but suffice
it to say that I know everyone down at CXO...and have the ability to make
life hell for systems users...and not only to run my NET_LINK_KILLER.COM
(which would clobber DECNET object-to-object communication requests)...

...Ever heard of ACL's and ACE's?? (that's Access Control List and
Access Control Entries)? Gawd, I *love* this stuff!!
I It's REALLY cool, see... they allow privileged users and system managers
(like me) to revoke access to any system object with a simple command. I
find it very useful for keeping finance weenies out of the engineering
    databases and vice-versa...But I digress...Sorry.

    Anyway...

Ed, if work sucks so much perhaps you can have a talk with Terry and
see if he can't find something else for you to do...?? I know Terry,
pretty well, dude, and he's always looking out for the interests of his
    employees.

    Just trying to help.

    Shane,

I've been noting for more years than you've been drinking beer and
I must say, I amazed at how quickly you've caught onto noting.

"This is my last note" is the NOTES-equivalent to "the check is in
    the mail".

Whenever anyone says that, I immediately look for people to make this
    sucker bet with.

| 16.26 | Proposal? | DREGS::BLICKSTEIN | The moment is a masterpiece | Fri May 31 1996 12:32 | 37 |
| | Now... getting back to the issues of "XXX sucks" notes.

We had this problem in the old MUSIC conference and I proposed and
implemented a solution which I think worked rather well.

I frankly think that Ed and folks like him should be able to post
"XXX sucks" notes to their hearts content. I don't like censorship
and I think "negative notes" (albeit more constructive ones than what
we've seen recently) are a good thing. I don't want to be inhibited
from saying "Here's why I just don't like this album".

However, there is a legitimate issue in that those kind of notes can
be either disruptive in various kind of ways or (for most people)
    just plain and thoroughly uninteresting.

What the rule I instituted was that each artist could have TWO notes.
There would be a "XXX" and an "XXX Sucks" note.

Those folks who wanted to read about XXX didn't have to choose between
next unseening over a "XXX suck fest" (a series of notes from people
saying how much they hated XXX) and thus, potentially missing some
non-suckfest notes or having to wade thru those notes to get to the
    content they were interested in.

It allowed people who wanted to post "sucks" notes to post them and the
only cost to folks (like most of us) who have no interest in those
was to occassionally have to hit "next unseen" across those notes.

It worked rather well, and you might wanna consider it for H_M.

    >>absolutely no value to anyone and is only good for a waste of disk
    space.

It's all a waste of disk space. Is there a shortage now?
Besides, being a fan of heavy metal I must say that there are times
when a person may feel they don't like a song or band for whatever
reason that may not be explainable. Sometimes when I hear a song it
just grabs me & I love it. Other times I may hear a song that
really, unexplicibally, sucks. With the type of music I like, I'm sure
I hear more $%it about how sucky my music is than any of the bands in
here(except ABBA). Is it so much to be able to express the same? I
don't think so. Lighten up and use that comma key over there to the
    right of the keyboard.

| | Agreed. Noting is all about expressing and hearing opinions. If I like
a band and you don`t, tell me it sux-I don`t care. I am comfortable
with my own opinions and I don`t mind hearing anybody elses. Some
people in this conference obviously can`t stand to hear other opinions.
If you people want people to agree with everything you like, you need
to talk to yourself in the mirror.
 |

| |
You're both right, in a way. There are times when you don't
like a song but don't know how to explain it, so it suffices
to say "it sucks". That's fine, but the problem occurs when
you start doing it all the time in several/many topics. What
value does that add? Do we really need a run-down of every
song that you think sucks? I know I don't, and I think I
speak for most people in here at the same time.

I'm sure that I'VE given a simple "it sucks" answer from time
to time, in here or otherwise, when I couldn't explain why I
didn't like a song. But you can bet that over the past 8+
years you can count the number of times that that's happened
on the fingers of 1 hand and still have enough fingers left
over to play with yourself. 8^)

This conference serves a few purposes:

    	1) What's out there
    	2) What's coming out soon
    	3) What do I like
    	4) What do you like
    	5) What don't I like
    	6) What don't you like

Take a look at #4 and #6 for a second. If you give people an
idea of what you like and don't like, and the reasons behind
your choices, there are actually people in here [me included]
who will go out of their way to

    	1) Notify you/others that new stuff is coming out that you/
    	    others might like
    	2) Review stuff that's already out that you/others might like

There are a bunch of us who have been in here from the start
[I created the original version of this conference back in
April of '88] and have a very good idea what each other likes
and/or doesn't like, and more importantly, WHY we like or
don't like it. And it's not unusual for messages to be sent
back in forth [NOTES/MAIL] on a personal level informing a
person here or a person there that a new album is coming out
that that person would probably like, because [s]he likes that
band. OR, a new band is on the scene and their material cont-
ains qualities that that person would appreciate because they
are similar to another band that that person likes. Etc., etc.

So take off your coat, stick around for awhile, and see if
you can fine-tune your sensitivity meter ... and people WILL
    	be quite cooperative.

Trust me "pal", as Coop said, people have lost jobs over similar stuff ...

| | Sounds to me like you`re the one with an attitude problem buddy.
The first time somebody makes you feel silly you want to smack `em.
Nobody asked you, but you`re still giving you two cents worth. Aren`t
you? You need to work on your own hostilities.

Wow, real snappy retort. I'll have to write that one down for
    future use.

Hey Coop! I'll up the ante to two bucks a piece. 8^)

Now, those are the best notes you guys has entered in this conference
so far. You stated opinions, you backed them with your feelings on
    the matter.

My fellow noters here have a good point. This is NOT the internet.
The internet is not moderated, and no one is responsble for it's
content. If it were the internet, I'd post a picture of my a$$ and
ask people to kiss it. ;-)

The difference between the Inter/Intranet and the EASYNET is that in
the case of this file (and GUITAR, COMMUSIC, MUSCLECARS, HOME_STUDIO
and others I host) is that *I* am accountable for what *you* guys post.
I wouldn't endanger my career for your lack of noting etiquette.

My fellow noters here probably have two reasons for giving you grief
    about the way you note:

    a) They don't want to lose this conference...you might think it sucks
but I for one have met a lot of good friends thru this medium
(including my wife). We love it.

    b) They don't want to lose their host (at least I hope they don't :-)
Since I don't expect that John or Charlie (your system managers)
would care to host half a million blocks of conferences for you,
I'd hope that you'd respect the hosts wishes to chill. I'm being
       nice now...

| | I'm really glad that there is a H_M conference around. :-)

    It's a form of stress-relief for me to read it....and personally, I
don't mind the little injections of negativity & put-downs.

I usually get quite a chuckle outta some of the things that y'all say.

I do have to admit that there are a couple folks out there that DO go
a little too far with the insults....BUT...C'est la vie....:-)

| | THere's something else that Coop left out in his differentiation of
    us and the internet.

The collective readership of this notesfile has a right to determine
the content and make-up of the file. The only rules we have to answer
    to are Digital's policies.

If the vast majority of the readers don't want no-content "xxx sucks"
notes, the moderators are well within their rights to accomodate the
wishes of the readership. It would be the same as us saying we don't
want discussions of the US Mid-East policy. Perfectly good topic, but
    not for THIS notesfile.

If you don't like that, it doesn't mean something's wrong in here, or
even that anything is wrong with you. It just means that this is NOT
    the right conference for you.

    Um, ok...

If I use the search command, I can find an endless array of cuss
words. Everything from sh** to fu**...

Especially from Mr. Cook, dating back several years. I know we're
all consenting adults, but Digital's policies are very specific
about profanity, yes? And topic #2, it specifies the rules around
using profanity, were those just for show?

Patrick, when I see them I do delete them. Sometimes they are
overlooked, and all I can say is "Oops". You'll probably get
    	the same answer from Coop.

Do things like this actually offend you so much that you feel
the need to bring them up every time you happen to think of
them, or do you just like to be a pain in the butt?

    	8^)

Everyone knows the old "if you don't like what you see, stop
lookin' at it". If anything bothered me, I'd stop lookin' at it.

Shawn, you are a better man than me any day, I could never keep
up with the mountainous data entry happening in this file.

My fingers are arthritic from trying to type the english language
let alone learning how to spell cuss words. I still can't spell
the seven bad words George Carlin likes the best...
