Hey !! I started a note on my band...are you saying that I'm
    a conceited jerk ?? ;(

I saw Diver Down at WPI about 5 years ago. I think the lineup has
changed somewhat since then (not sure) but they were really good.
Being a huge VH fan I am usually more critical of bands covering their
stuff but they not only played the material well, they hammed it up
pretty good too...just like VH. I'll have to catch them the next
    time at the Cove again.

    	Of course I didn't say that ... I said, ummm, well I guess I
did sort of hint at that, didn't I?

No offense intended. I mean, Pete Cook started a note on HIS
own band, and he's definitely not a ... hoo boy, I think I'll
    	quit while I'm ahead.

| 1111.4 | Thanks Shawn | ICS::CLELAND | Check it twice | Wed Nov 22 1995 15:08 | 63 |
| | Well Shawn, I didn't get a chance to thank you for showing
up at the gig. You have an open invitation for the guest list
    	at any upcoming shows.

BTW, if you saw the band 5-6 years ago, you might have seen the
drummer who's playing with Extreme now, Mike Mengini (sp?). He's
in a recent Performer magazine article on Extreme, he does list
Diver Down in his credentials. No, I don't pretend to be as good
    	as he is, incredible chops.

I never started a topic only because the real devotion belongs
    	with Van Halen.

Out of all the clubs I've played with these guys, not once has
anyone ever scribbled 'Diver Down' on the walls of the dressing
room. We realize we're only a tribute band, and the glory is all
    	for the band we're idolizing.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

I've been with a dozen original bands on the local circuit, and
it's a tough world out there. The club owner promises $200, but
at the end of the night, the band gets $75 and several excuses.
I really do wonder how most bands survive in this business, and
for the most part it's because the band members are driven, love
to play music, and would be willing to play for free just to get
their music in front of a decent crowd.

The original bands that play at our gigs really are incredible,
and I personally wish every band we play with gets the success
they deserve. We will never be able to sign a record deal, we
know that up front. We can only put together the best show
possible, and hope everyone in front of the stage has a good
time listening to material from VH1 through 1984.

I have to mention that we might be losing Chris M. due to
family obligations. Which is absolutely killing me, as VH is
such a guitar oriented band, finding someone who can play
and sing the part is virtually impossible. We need more than
just blinding chops and a good voice. We need a good musician,
    	a good listener, a decent singer, a team player & a businessman.

We need Someone who is willing to spend 20-30 hours before each
gig practicing music that is not their own, drive anywhere from
50-200 miles to get to the gig, show up early enough for a decent
sound check, enjoy themselves until showtime, blaze the crowd with
a barrage of Eddie riffs, take a 5 minute guitar solo, take a bow,
pack up and drive 50-200 miles home after all is said and done.

It's a special blend of experience/personality to play music
on this circuit. I'd like to think I haven't "copped out" by
taking this gig. I know I have no future for a record contract,
but I also don't plan on doing this gig for the rest of my life.
I'm having the time of my life, and after almost one year with
this band, I have to say I'm still having fun.

When the performance stops being fun, I'll move on to a bigger
and better life with a hopefully bigger and better band.

Thanks for the promo Shawn, it's not often a person is recognized
by friends, I do appreciate it...

    	Patrick C.

song just to see how many little black dots they can fit together.
That intro is all over the place on double bass. I've always fudged
it to where it sounds like what he's playing but I'm sure it's
not exactly right cause I cheat and use my floor tom...I dunno he
might be using his floor tom too...hard to tell...but it's just
    cool...

| | I just got a call from Diver Down's Manager to fill in for their
guitarist this Friday (I guess he sliced his left hand, and can't play
    a commited gig?!).

    My response?

was a flash in the pan &^)

I had no idea she would be calling you, she's more resourceful
    	than I thought...

But seriously, this friday is no big loss since the club is
Almeida's in Tiverton, RI. It's a restaurant with a music
club downstairs, with no room to store additional drum kits.
I heard a rumor that bands have to share drum kits, so I'm
not shedding a tear over this one///

I AM shedding a tear over Chris, he sliced his left index
finger open last weekend, and should really consider stitches.

To his credit, he's the only kid I know who could bandage his
left index finger and still attempt to play 23 Van Halen tunes.

Too bad we're losing him, but life is more important than a
tribute band, and after 3 years with this gig life for him
    	is leading down another road...

I'll post the 44 tunes in here this band performs. We never
play more than 24-26/gig, but we never know what we'll be
playing 'til we get to the gig. Kind of just spin the wheel
and get up on stage. But for YOU, well, maybe we can work
    	something out . . . &*)

Bela Fleck is amazing but... the star of that show is (amazingly
enough) the bass player Victor Wooten. He is, IMHO, about twice
as good as any other bass player I've heard. He's twice as good
in the "chops" department, and about 3x as good in the "musicality

Just can't think of any other instrument where one guy is so far ahead

| 1111.50 | Twisted Fate... | ICS::CLELAND | GPS Eastern Sites | Wed Feb 07 1996 15:26 | 45 |
| | Just a flash in the pan...
Awhile back I was a member of a Boston based quartet named
Twisted Fate. We recorded a demo back in Dec. '94, and last
month a final mixdown was recently submitted to a local rag
out of Billerica, MA. Here's the review././.
	Metronome Magazine, February 1996
	Hearings / by Douglas Sloan
Twisted Fate - "Woke Up Pissed" 6-song cassette
	. Suicide
	. Nasty Funk
	. Warriors Dance
	. River Boat
	. Waited
	. T.F. (title track)
Twisted Fate came out of the gates at full bore with smatterings
of Lynch Mob, Dio and Mr. Big coloring the face of their delivery.
And although the band isn't breaking any new ground musically,
they demonstrate an acute musical prowess which helps to forge
their huge (and I mean huge) sound. "Suicide" is the best song
of the lot while the others follow in typical metal fashion.
Chunky bass lines, cannon-cracking drums and arpeggio intense
guitar antics set the battlefield for soaring vocals (by two
different vocalists no less) which rival those of the masters.
Headbangers will definitely find refuge with Twisted Fate as
they resurrect an otherwise dormant heavy metal monster.
	--------------------------------------------------------
The vocalist, Jon Fagan has since left the outfit to persue
a possible record deal on the west coast. The special guest
vocalist "Russ" is starting a new project. The guitarist
Jamie Spencer and bassist Doug Brunskill have reformed under
a new banner. I've been assisting by showing up for rehearsals
every other week, but they're currently looking for a full-time
drummer/plastic smacker. Of course if they actually get a record
deal with this demo tape, Diver Down will be looking for a full
time drummer. I'm just sitting back to see what happens from here...

| | Diver Down has undergone several personnel changes in the
last 6 years, and Chris McKenna has retired as the resident
    	Eddie Van Halen facsimile.
We're debuting the latest addition on friday, Amos San Filippo.
His first break was at age 18 when Gary Moore used Amos' song
'Cold Hearted' on the album 'Corridors of Power'. Originally
from Coventry, England, Amos studied music at The London
Conservatory of Music and has recorded with Gary Barden of MSG.
Amos was also hired by White Snake for their 1987 European tour.
After moving to America he headed his original band 'Tribal Soul'
in Los Angeles before migrating to New England with his family.
As for me, I'm still pretending to play the drums like Alex VH.
Key word pretending... I've been driving my neighbors batty
practicing 2 hrs after work each day for this gig.
If anyone ever tells you playing Alex Van Halen is a no-brainer,
back-hand 'em for me. Anyone can fake a drum fill, but analyzing
songs like I'm the One, Light Up The Sky, Outta Love Again, Romeo's
Delight, Loss of Control, Mean Street, and Hot For Teacher, show you
the talent that is Alex. And that was the late 70's to early 80's.
You should see Alex these days, such as from the Balance tour
recorded at the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto. That drum solo
    	is SMOKIN'...
As for this band, we're out to have a good time, and we hope
everyone else is too. If you're there to micro analyze every
little guitar, bass & drum fill, you're missing the point.
To quote Charlie, "if you were there and didn't have a good
time, you missed it". But Charlie is always quoting David Lee
    	Roth, especially on stage.

[applause] someone else is able to appreciate and realize that
Alex VH is god ! cool.

Outta Love Again...[ting boom] best fill ever ;)
I know that you guys don't play any stuff w/Hagar but you have gotta
love the drums Alex plays off 5150 especially on Get Up and 5150.
And Doin Time on Balance just rocks. Well there I had my VH fix
    for the day. Laters...

Shane, who's gonna be listenin to some VH on the way to VA

| | Well, just finishing up three weeks of road rash...

Played down in Putnam, CT at "Guido Murphy's", March 29...

Then hit up The Ranch House in Marshfield April 5th, down near
Duxbury Beach. That was a fun show, Draw the Line played the
    night before...

Next we're going back into Sir Morgan's Cove tomorrow night, bringing
along the song list. I'm trying to convince the guys to do all request
night again. They're trying to wimp out.

I can play around 95% of the first six Van Halen records, but Amos has
the hardest job with the guitar playing.

Maybe we'll bring a set list, but will be very receptive to requests
from the front of the stage.

The newest additions to the set list: Sinner's Swing & Dirty Movies
from Fair Warning, and Loss of Control & Could This be Magic from
    Women and Children First.

I have some space on the guest list, anyone with no plans for tomorrow
night send me some mail and I'll get you on the guest list...

| 1111.84 | Thank you WKPE | ICS::CLELAND |  | Tue May 20 1997 07:26 | 24 |
| | May 10th was amazing, at The Rip Tide Tavern in N. Eastham, MA.

Special Thanks to WKPE, Rock 104.7 FM and Tim White, the morning DJ and
news director for the station (Rock 104.7, The Cape).

The maniac showed up at the club, signing people up for their contest
and giving away shirts and bumper sticks. The Rock 104.7 contest is a
grand prize of one million pennies, which is $10,000.

This guy was promoting the show the whole week before Mother's Day, and
the club was so packed they were turning people away at the door.

It's always nice to have a 50,000 watt radio station plugging your
gig for you, and giving away entry forms at the club to win $10,000
dollars while listening to the radio. Every little bit helps...

    Upcoming shows:

5/28	- Desperado's, Providence, RI (wednesday night show)
5/31	- Jokers, New Bedford, MA
    6/6 - Filling Station, W. Warwick, RI
    6/20	- Guido Murphy's, Putnam, CT
