| 811.5 | what is a good local act ? | WLDWST::EDWARDS |  | Mon Oct 14 1991 14:10 | 11 |
| | I think because there may not be that many people from California in
the H.M. notes, I should redirect this file a little. How about this ?
What is wrong with the local bands today, keep in mind that they are
the future of the big acts. I myself manage two bands on the local
scene, both are very popular in the Bay Area so I get a chance to
see most of the local acts. I can say with great confidence that
for the most part the local acts are terrible, if there not up there as a
clone act, they run a list of three chord tunes. What does it take for
a local act to catch your eye ?

I think Lisa is gone. I was looking for her to get some Deen C. info a
while back and she wasn't in ELF anymore (I think Shawn pointed it out
    to me, don't really recall).

| | It takes a LOT here in Dallas!

First (and foremost) They must sound original, even if they are doing
cover tunes. If they sound too much like the band they are covering,
what's the point? I mean, if I wanted to hear Boston or Led Zeppelin,
I would go home and throw in some, that's not why I go to clubs...

Second (and probably of equal importance live...) Is that they must
have a good stage presence. The singer has to know what moves to make
at the same time he's singing. I think he (or she) should also know
how to talk to a drunken buncha loudmouth hell raisers to get them to
say "HELL YEAH" whenever he wants to...

Basically a band should have their sh*t together before they even try
to debut, or they will not succeed locally. And if they don't succeed
locally, then they sure won't go any farther than that!

| 811.8 | Does a bands look matter, or just the music? | WLDWST::EDWARDS |  | Tue Oct 22 1991 11:23 | 9 |
| | How important is the way they dress ? I've seen a lot of local bands
that just where what they where everyday, I'm not saying that they
should dress in flashy clothes or crazy outfits but they should at
    least have something different on.

I think why it's so hard to get signed these days for the good bands
anyway, is there are to many local bands sending their tapes in that
are terrible. If you have to filter through 5000 tapes I think some
of the good stuff gets lost in the shuffle. What do think ?

| | I think the music AND the stage presence matter. You have to be able
to play good music and "put on a show". If the misicians are just
going to stand there, the you may as well save the ticket money and buy
the tape. Clothes don't make the band.

Yup, it is the music... But the look of a band means ALOT to me
    also...

I can't stand it when a band smokes, and when you look at them,
they look like a bus stop....

But whenever I see a dude up on the stage playing guitar or what have
you, it definitely heightens my opinion of him if he's decked out in a
satin shirt and some gnarly leather pants...I could go into further
detail here, but I'm getting hot already...!

Talent make the band. actually Money makes the band...without that what
instuments are you going to play....(spoons, and plastic buckets!)

Its a sad fact that at Club level, a good image will probably carry the
band further than their music, that is to a certain point. If you have
two bands playing the club scene and one is a bunch of pretty boys with
big hair, big lips, big egos and no songs, they'll likley to get just as
many gigs (more?) as a band with good songs and an average stage show.

The reason ? The bar/club owners. If they're gonna book a metal band
they are going to want bring in the punters and make money. You'll
probably find the owner doesn't like metal anyway and so he probably
doesn't know a good band from a bad one.

I know as well as the rest of you people that the music should be all
that matters, but the image thing (weather its glam or what) *is*
becoming as important as the music itself. Maybe more ?

| 811.15 | What it takes to get applause. | WLDWST::EDWARDS |  | Tue Oct 22 1991 15:35 | 10 |
| | Something that I have noticed over the years is that even if the crowd
likes a band that they haven't seen before, they won't applaud, or they
will give them the token golf clap. As the band is playing you can
see people tappin their foot or just gettin into it, the tune is over
and they become to cool to give it up for the band. What the hell's
going on with people today ? Especially if the like another band that
    is playing that night.

sure why... It depends partially on how much I've had to drink!

| | I think it has more to do with people thinking their too cool to
actually show some *enthusiasm* for the band. It's really sad that a
band has to get up on stage and sweat their a$$e$ off to entertain
people when those people don't even pay attention except for the
occasional glance at the stage. Hey this isn't Television, it's LIVE!
I always yell at the top of my lungs if I like the band. I usually get
some pretty freaky looks, but do I look like I care? *Hell no!* I'm
glad to hear this isn't only a Dallas thing.

| | Hey Bildo, could you elaborate on that, like please?

This made me laugh...Over the weekend I saw a band called Abbey Normal
play at DCL (they're a rippin' 3 piece band, one of the few...) and
the singer/bassist said to the crowd: "Hey you guys wanna see our most
inspired show of all time???" To which the crowd replies "HELL YEAH!"
(what else?) So he goes: "Well then, INSPIRE ME, DAMMIT!"
