Captured is the best one IMO. Steve Smith is a WICKED drummer. Left
because he couldn't deal with the pop anymore. I liked 'em best in
the early years of Perry, but eventually he got too much control and
changed their direction to a weaker, more commercial sound.

in the Sky on it. I also saw them live for the Departure tour.

Escape was one of my favs, especially the title tune. I think Neil
Schon (love the way he plays) and Smith carried that band.

Did Neil Schon do any wailing guitar work on Journey stuff,
or was he "held back" by the band's image, ala George Lynch

| | Here's the lyrics to Separate Ways.... I think

Here we stand.. Worlds apart hearts broken in two
Sleepless nights.. losing ground I'm reachin for you
Feelin that its gone can change your mind
If we can't go on to survive the tide.. Love divides

    CHORUS
    Someday love will find you
Break those chains that bind you
    One night will remind you
How we touched and went our separate ways
If he ever hurts you.. True love won't desert you
You know I still love you
Though we touched and went our separate ways

Troubled times.. caught between confusion and pain
Distant eyes.. promises we made were in vain
If you must go I wish you love
    You'll never walk alone
Take care my love.. Miss you love

    CHORUS

    I still love you girl
    I really love you girl
And if he ever hurts you
    True love won't desert you
    No No

| 501.40 | Steve Perry | FRETZ::HEISER | Grace changes everything | Tue Nov 01 1994 14:49 | 15 |
| | Anyone have some straight facts about what happened to Steve Perry from
the Journey break-up to the present? I've been told that during that time
his mother passed away, and supposedly he also became a Christian.

I'm getting my information second-hand from a friend at church, but she
was good enough to let me borrow the CD. I'm listening to his new album
now, "For the Love of Strange Medicine" on Columbia records. It is
produced by long-time Christian artist Tim Miner. Tim also co-wrote 2
of the 11 songs with Steve.

The lyrics have some watered-down gospel overtones with a few love
songs in there. If you are a Journey fan, you will like this
    album.

| | Steve pretty much dropped out of sight, but I had heard he was hanging
around a lot with ailing guitarist Jason Becker, offering moral support.

Had heard he had a new record contract, and then there were rumours of
the band Journey trying to make a go at it again with the original
    line-up, but nothing concrete.

| | > Mike -- does FTLOSM sound anything like Vessell??

I don't know if I can answer that. The songwriting team in Vessell
were a couple of Journey/Kansas wannabes.

FTLOSM has top-notch production, songwriting, and sound quality for one
thing. The guitarist is someone named Lincoln Brewster (I didn't know
Punky's brother wailed!). His sound is very processed, like a lot of the
album's sounds/vocals, and uses lots of pinch harmonics and
strategically-placed rapid-fire riffs. He reminds me of a cross between
Neil Schon and the dude in Queensryche. Maybe QR because of all the
processing. I can see why Perry has him on the album though. He's
definitely a Journeyesque type player. Probably grew up on the stuff
    like we did.

The single getting current air play is "You Better Wait" and is the opening
    track.

| | It appears Perry lost his mother to cancer within the last year too.
Funny how things like this change your perspective. The reflective
lyrics and musical arrangements (i.e., low-key) are also typical of
someone who has made a recent decision for Christ.

The single "You Better Wait" (track 1) is my favorite on the album.
It's a song about abstinence. The chorus goes:

    "You better Wait
     Stop yourself before you fall
     You better Wait
Stop before you lose it all
Somewhere there's love, Oh somewhere, somewhere"

The title track seems to shed some light too:

    "Some are believers,
Some don't know (some are lost)
     They're lost and alone
     Some are deceivers
Their souls been sold (for the love)
For the Love of strange medicine"

> Accordin to People_Magazine The Original_Members of Journey are

I guess People was wrong, because....

> The Band_members will be...
> Steve Perry
> Neal Schon
> Jonathan Cain
> Ross Valory
> Steve Smith

are far from the original members. As well as very far from the best
lineup, with all due respect to DECWIN::JUDY.

The *original* members include only two of the above: Neal and Ross.

The other members of the original lineup were Gregg Rolie (keyboards - B3
player extraoridinaire), Aynsley Dunbar (drums), and George Tickner
    (rhythym guitar).

Gregg sang back then, too, and that, IMHO, made this band a whole lot
better. He split vocals on ???? (can't remeember the name), the LP
that lauched Journey into stardom (and into pop schlock), and Gregg
quit after he saw the writing on the wall.

Get the first CD - "Journey"!!! This CD is a major problem for me. It
is one of my favorite CD's of all time, but as soon as I say it's
"Journey," I get "the looks." This album is incredible, doesn't even
remotely sound like latter Journey (i.e. it's good) and believe it or
not, is about half-instrumental. I play it for Journey fans, and they
look at me in disbelief (well so do Journey haters, but that look is
    one of newfound respect).

Where'd Greg Rolie go from there? Sounds familiar, that's for
    	sure.

And Aynsley Dunbar also played for Whitesnake.

Gregg never reached much prominence after he left. In
musician circles, I think he was still respected and probably
played enough to pay the bills, but as for fame....

He did rejoin his original group, Santana, for at least
a tour. Gregg and Neal both ditched Santana (remember
"Soul Sacrifice" at Woodstock? Neal and Gregg backing
Carlos) to form the original Journey, and imo, Santana
lost a lot when they lost Gregg's B3, too.
