| | The Boston MUsic awards COULD be a respectable LOCAL music
award show, but in the past 2 years that I have attended
the BMA has proven itself to be a(nother) popularity contest.
I am sure that the New Kids on the Block will walk away with
a few awards, even though in '86 the audience Booed them during
their pathetic, lip-synched performance of "The Right Stuff".
Hopefully this year will be a little more "open minded" and
reward some bands that have been overlooked in the past years.
I have nothing against A-smith or T-Tuesday, but there are a
LOT more bands out there that deserve awards other than the
ones who have "made it" (or kinda made it).
With 1600-2000 "local" bands playing around Mass., there has to
a greater selection of artists other than the big "Boston"
regulars, (such as J.Geils, Boston, Cars, 'til tuesday, Aerosmith).

There is a lot of talent in the Boston area, and it's time the
BMA started to recognize and award them for the efforts.

    chUck

Even though the awards may be pathetic, the BMA is a good place to
mingle with some some of the Boston area "biggies", such as Pat Methany,
    Greg Hawkes, Ben Orr, etc.

IF the awards are voted on by the people of Boston and not given
out by a committee then it is up the the club going public to
use those write in spaces for bands that have yet to make it.

It becomes a popularity contest if people (the voters) allow
    it too.

really psyched!! I only hope they win this year. Does anyone know if
there is any way the public can vote on this thing or if it's purely a
committee thing. If I remember correctly last year you could send in a
card or something. Can anyone elaborate?? - KIm

best Music Dealers, Clubs, and Radio Stations. I'll enter some that
applies to the majority here, but if you're interested in another area
(state, city, and even country) let me now. I'm surprised that there
aren't any Z-Rock stations on here (that I know of).

I took lessons for a long time and I've learned a lot more, a lot more
quickly, from playing in bands then I ever learned from the lessons.
Not that I'm devaluing them at all, but I don't really want lessons
right now, I want to *play*. Knowledge without application of it
requires a special type of motivation to want to learn and I don't have
that right now. Maybe I'll get that again, but that's not it right
now. There's nothing like the motivation of a band to keep me
practicing a lot and working on new stuff consistently.
> Remember Greg..........Life is what you make it!
Oh, I know I know... You know me, bad attitude...
> The same applies for playing.
No, I disagree somewhat with this point. You can control (to some
degree) how you think and feel and your direction in life, but a band
involves other people and because they are in a position to determine
how things associated with the band affect you, they have as much
control over YOUR destiny (in the band) as you do. There are too many
coincidental and environmental issues involved with playing in a band
to be able to say that you have control over your destiny in that
    situation.
> A *band* isn't going to make you playing any better(Well maybe a
> little) than it is now!
Not directly, but it does directly challenge you to play your best and
to work hard on learning the things you need to learn to do the
material the band is doing. I don't do a good job of motivating
myself, and a band provides the incentive I need to get my butt in
    gear.

    Yo, Friz and Greg:

Positive outlook on life is a good start for having a positive
outlook on everything else. And one should not let other's progress
(or lack of) get to their own playing. I play because I simply
enjoy playing the instrument whether it's in my room or in a gig.

It's just all matter of attitude. You can go home and sell
everything you have because you don't think you're as good as a wiz
kid, but what will that accomplish? But if that makes you happy,
then why not? It would make me a lot happier if I was to go home
and shred my fingers off to get a little better than I was.
What comes around goes around. One of these days, I might even
impress someone else in the same manner as many has done to me.

A band is a good motivator for learning, but lessons are just as
important. Can't dis-count one or the other. Just as important in
choosing a good teacher, one should choose bandmembers just as
carefully. Good ones in either of the category are very hard to come
by. Besides, if you're not in a band, that's perfect time to go off
and sharpen up on other hobbies.

Just because I'm not in a band, that doesn't mean I won't play.
Sometimes being in a band can be restrictive as far as the types of
material I get to play. Instead of sitting around sulking, I tried
to get off my butt and as a result, last couple of months have been
    very productive for me.

    Life is an attitude.

    Rock on!

    J.

As I said some where else today I missed the early morning Beverly
Hillbilies so I found myself watching "First Edition" or whatever
one of the morning Channel 4 news shows is called and saw a bit of

What's that cover they (Left Nut (not UK's left Nut) do? I like it.
    	(I think!)

RE: Tribe / "Joyride" I like the rest of their Abort release but I
liked their Here At the Home a bit better, it captured their live
sound better without sounding too pollished at all. Abort contained
a few new songs but most of it;s re-recordings from H.A.T.H.

I'm glad to see Seka, Bosstones, etc. in there....
